Why do people look intimidated when I talk to them?

Anonymous

Whenever I talk to people or ask a stranger a question, they look surprised or intimidated. By questions I mean regular questions, like asking for directions. Their faces suggest that they do not expect me to approach them. Even if it's a simple yes/no question, they take minutes to respond. I have been out with friends and when they approach strangers, things like these never happen.

For example, I asked today, a stranger, a girl of my age a simple yes/no question at a cyber cafe. She stared at me, looked real surprised, took minutes to think and then answered.

People from the opposite sex appear even more nervous. They look down or up but never make eye contact.

I mean, I am socially awkward myself and can sense when that's the reason behind someone's discomfort. However, such things take place regularly. There is something wrong with me probably that makes them behave this way.

My cloths and hairstyle aren't unusual and I don't use makeup. I have a feminine voice that sounds normal and according to some - 'sweet'. My tone of speaking is normal too.

What's the matter with me?
