Why do people think being rude is cool and funny?

This is something I encounter a lot on this site, but generally on the Internet, as well.. People who are harsh and loud in their replies, get rewarded and praised as "brutally honest" or "funny" and have a lot of followers. On the contrary, those who are modest and helpful rarely get as "clout" and are often ignored or overlooked by people..

I don't know if this is an Internet phenomenon, I've noticed that in real life these people aren't that popular

When people feel insecure, they often feel better about themselves if they can compare themselves to others they view as less than them. Picture what I call the Drowning Man Syndrome.

Someone is drowning in the ocean, and you swim out to rescue that person. As you get close, they'll reach out and push you down. You'll think they're trying to drown you, but they have nothing to gain by drowning you. In a panic situation, we revert back to earliest memories and instincts. One of your earliest memories is discovering you go up when you push down. That is what this person is attempting to do. The goal is to go up, not to push you down. When you go down, the person just gets angry at you.

The same holds true for the Drowning Man Syndrome. Insecure people often push down on those around them in their attempt to rise higher and get their head above the water. In actuality, it doesn't work. Though they can push people down, they don't rise up for more than just an instant. This tease at feeling boosted just leads them to become insatiable and constantly push others down... hoping the boost eventually sticks. It is a dysfunctional pattern that only draws attention to their insecurity.

This is really interesting. So you're basically that those, who find that kind of behavior funny, are insecure themselves if I got this right?

Yes, that is accurate. Confident people don't see any value in being in your face. Even if they disagree with you, they'll respect your right to believe whatever you believe. It's the insecure ones who attempt to legitimize their belief by convincing others to buy into it.

Yup to all that, its quite often the case online. Its part of what needs correcting with this site, people who take the time are often ignored and will leave, people who are here for drama, spread some agenda or for laughs gain.

Current society seems to favor and reward the uncultured. At least it makes it easier to know whom to avoid from one's circle of friends.
