Does no central heating in the winter make you sick?

I post these questions because I like to distract myself. A person on Reddit says she lives with her boyfriend's parents. They have no had no central heating since it broke about 8 years ago.

The parents are horders so once the boiler broke it just stayed broken. They go onto say that they moved in 4 years ago and they had to heat up a kettle for hot water for a year before they got an electric shower installed.

She goes on to say that the house is freezing, especially now in -3 degrees (celsius). They only have one heater and that is down stairs and is off during the night. Her boyfriend sleeps with the window open and when she closes it, he puts the fan on.

She goes onto say the dishwasher broke past week and that would a problem but the sink leaks so they have to use a tub of freezing water or boil the kettle to wash the dishes because they refuse to get anything fixed. She has to pour the full tub of water outside as she can't pour it down the drain.

The bath is also blocked so eveytime she takes a bath she has to scoop out the water. So she doesn't wash for days because she is in so much pain for constantly moving water about.

I don't know why she hasn't called people to fix the bath? Is she that ashamed of the house be messy? Why do people live like this? Is this a danger to her health and safety?
