What kind of tools do you have and use?
Both; i work on a wide variety of equipment and often encounter both standards. Rarely outside of automobiles do i see both on a single piece of equipment though.
Also, the US standard is an amalgamation of the Empirical standards we inherited from the UK and the Standard of Automotive Engineers. I find “standard” an unhelpful shortening of an otherwise meaningful term. Despite also being somewhat inaccurate, using “SAE” or “Empirical” to describe the US standard is more accurate because “metric” is also a “standard”.
If you are American, you must have both Imperial and metric tools. My Ford Explorer has some components that are metric and some that are Imperial.
@exitseven Sometimes, life is a pain in the ass. What's the alternative?
@OlderAndWiser Here's an idea, Why not make automobiles and other pieces of large machinery in the USA.
@exitseven Companies like Ford and GM have assembly plants in Mexico, Canada, and other countries, and complete "domestic" cars are assembled in foreign countries. And some component assemblies are done in foreign countries and sent to the US for incorporation into "domestic" cars. Meanwhile, foreign automakers have assembly plants in the US where "foreign" vehicle are produced. It really blurs the lines between foreign and domestic.
@exitseven Careful. My girlfriend was made in China! :) :) :)
@exitseven I agree, but not much we can do about it. Some of that industry returned to the US in the Trump years but it won't happen again as long as the government s hostile to businesses.
@exitseven I'm not a big fan of the man but he did many things that worked well for most Americans.
yes, I never really liked him. I never watched the Apprentice and wondered how he was going to be president and run multiple business. However, his policies were all things I had been screaming about for the last 20 years and I figured that even if he only did a couple of these things we still would be better off. He really did much better than I expected and for once in my whole life it felt like I had real representation in Washington. I have no illusions about his altruistic intentions but why look a gift horse in the mouth.
@exitseven Yeah, the question isn' "do you love the guy?" The question is "did he do more things that were good for the country?"
I allways considered metric to be standart. The only time I use imperial is when playing Dungeons and dragons (5feet grid and when online digital ruler). So do I answer metric or both? Both either because I use some "tools" or because I consider metric standart.
My Dad bought me a SnapOn Tool box filled with both hand tools, and electric impacts, both ⅜ and a ½ in drive. And an amazing electric ratchet ⅜ drive, also SnapOn. But obviously you need both, some vehicles have metric and imperial under the same hood!
@AviatorTom Thank you so much for the MHO⭐️. I truly appreciate it.

I was an auto mechanic for several years, so I have, and use, both.
You never know when a NA automaker is going to use standard, metric, or even both, on the same damned car. Fucking engineers. 😡
Welcome to the global economy!
Metric is THE standard of all standards. If I remember correctly, there are only three countries in the world staying non-metric, among them the good ole USA...
I just use a monkey wrench and round that fucker right off
No option in a metric country but to have metric tools. I have to say I don't like metric nuts and bolts as they are a really sloppy thread and UNC & UNF is much better.
I work at Scania truck factory, we use both. Mostly metric, but i use both.
I have them both but it pisses me off to have to deal with metric sizes.
Different manufacturers use different sizes so we need tools to work on both types. I wish they'd make up their minds and use one type
Most of our tools have both measurements engraved or stamped on them.
I have both but metric is most often used since cars use all metric with everything except the spark plugs, really old cars and plumbing fittings use standard
Er, metric IS the standard tools! Like I’m going to use the inches, feet, cups, pounds, etc.
I have both, but only because the stuff I need too work on is inconsistant.
The world should have moved on too metric over 60 years ago.
I need both because of all the sellouts
Standard tools
Depends what I'm working on.
Only Americans don't use metric.
That’s not true at all.
Both.
You need both this day in age.
goth and use them both...
In the US you have to have both.
Metric.
