April 24, 2024 by John Nightbridge

Banyuwangi, Indonesia ā€“ A tragic accident occurred at the Ijen volcano park in East Java on Saturday when a tourist fell 250 feet into the active volcanoā€™s crater while attempting to take photographs. The victim, Huang Lihong, a 31-year-old woman from China, was visiting the park with her husband as part of a guided tour. Despite being cautioned about the risks, Lihong disregarded the warnings and ventured closer to the edge, resulting in her fatal fall.

The Ijen volcano, renowned for its mesmerizing ā€œblue fireā€ phenomenon, attracts visitors from around the world. Lihong and her husband had ascended the volcano to witness the sunrise, with their tour guide warning them about the dangers of approaching the craterā€™s edge to take pictures. Initially, she had kept a safe distance but later began to step backward to get a closer look.

Tragedy struck when Lihong stumbled over her long clothing and lost her footing, falling into the volcanoā€™s mouth. A photograph circulating in local media showed her posing with one leg raised, the stunning sulfur gas clouds forming a tragic backdrop just moments before the accident occurred.

Some people just love playing with fire.
