Had my first game last night with a new team I just joined. I wanted to make a good first impression. Welp…. it was memorable, if nothing else.

The other team was trying to clear the puck out of their zone. My responsibility was to get to the boards and attempt to stop the puck if it stayed tight to the wall. So I slid into the boards ass-first, relatively, gently, and…. whoops…

It was one of the panels that doubles as a door, and whoever left that way last time didn’t latch it back all the way🤦‍♂️😂

On the brightside, I bounced back with a pretty sweet goal off of a redirection…

The more I watch this, the more I love how pissed the other team is😂

I think I have more goals off of tipped shots than I do from just straight up shooting🤦‍♂️😂(These are cool in their own right, but it’d be nice to get a few more clean snipes that don’t require slow-mo to appreciate, haha)

And while I did intend to do it, I think I’m still surprised that it works every time, lmao, so maybe I should be more confident about it.

Anyway, I guess I got a two-fer on surprises.

I’m just kind of a big galoot😂 I’m really just regular-big, like when I played football I was on the smaller or at least average side because we’d have like 280-300 lb linemen. I switch to hockey and everyone’s normal-sized and it makes me the proverbial 800 lb gorilla….

Is it normal that both team uniforms look so similar? I know of referees that refused to start a game because of that.

Haha, yeah, so…. the rink camera service is bad with color. In reality, the opponents are clearly orange, and our team is like a cardinal red (mine is bright red because I’m using an old team’s jersey til I can get an official one). The camera mutes the colors, the orange is pretty bright in reality, so it’s easy to differentiate.

A few seasons ago I was on a team that was issued forest green jerseys, and our first game we played a team with black jerseys. It was hard to tell on the ice when trying to look quickly at your surroundings, and on the cameras, you couldn’t even tell who was who, haha. We ended up having jerseys made, and we got really bright green, like a Hi-Liter marker, just to be sure. I thought they were kind of ugly, lmao, but you couldn’t miss your teammates out there😂

I just started in this particular league, this one is more permanent, I’ve only played in a “draft league” so far where the seasons are only three months long and then they re-shuffle the deck in terms of who plays on what team. This new league is like six month seasons. So the same guys return year after year, and you’re responsible for having your own uniforms, the league isn’t like “ok, you’re red, you’re blue, etc”, but I’d imagine there must be some kind of rule in place where a color is already spoken for. I know some guys who play much higher level that have a dark home, a white away, and even a third alternate jersey. I think you kind of just build on it each season. Start with one, maybe add the white the next season, and then alternative ones in later seasons if you’re so inclined.

But yeah…. certainly leaves room for confusion if you’re not careful. I’d say I’ve never seen lower give-a-shit levels than the guys who ref our games though, I swear this one fat dude never calls icing just because it’s one less time he has to bend over to pick the puck up for a play stoppage, lmao. So the idea of them refusing to start a game for anything other than finding out they wouldn’t be paid, I just can’t see it😂

Oh, gotcha. That’s a weirdly bad picture quality, then. What I remember from football here, the home team has first dibs on their colors, so if necessary the guest team plays in their away-uniforms. But I have read about games, where both uniforms were too similar to those of the home team, so the referee had the guests play in the away-uniforms of the home team. 🤪

Yeah, it’s a pretty glitchy service overall, but when it works, it’s cool to have your amateur athletic exploits on film. But it’s happened before, as I said, and this was my first time playing at this rink, so it’s just a universal problem, I guess.

Lmao, that’s funny that they’d give the other team the away unis😂 I remember when I played semipro football, we had home/away jerseys, but occasionally some other team would have the wrong jerseys, or only had one color jersey altogether. Or this one team had black home jerseys, and the away jersey wasn’t white, it was metallic gold. That was a little weird, but in our case, we wore red jerseys, so it wasn’t an issue. But if we had yellow jerseys, that would be a problem.
