How do you give directions?

Once on Main, go past the Walmart, about 4 more lights down, then turn left at the Starbucks, then you'll see a McDonald's, take that right, then...

Once on Main, go four blocks down, make a right, then go 8 blocks down, then make a left, then...

Once on Main, it's about 10 minutes down, then swing a right on Mullen, then in about 20 more minutes, make a left on Bower...

Depends who I'm giving directions to...

If I'm talking to a guy (guys are visual creatures) I draw a map and label key features on it. None of the poll choices are a map for a guy.

If I'm talking to a girl (girls are verbal and textual creatures), I give step-by-step verbal and written directions. None of the poll choices are long enough for a girl. If you use #2, which is the best of the choices given, you have to also include things like, "When you get to Walmart, you might want to stop in because they have a sale on shoes today. I bought my wife a pair. Hope she likes them. And Starbucks, if you want to stop for a pumpkin spice latte, they're really good, but parking is difficult. You might want to park at the drugstore across the street. That McDonalds just hired some new college kids who don't know what they're doing yet, the service is horrible and the food is usually cold, so I wouldn't stop there. If you're really hungry, turn left at the next light, there's a Wendy's on the right."

I keep directions simple and human no overthinking.

I focus on three things

First, the landmark.
People remember places better than street names.

Then the movement.
Turn left, go straight, look for the second corner short, clear steps.

And finally, the confirmation.
A small cue so they know they’re in the right place when they see it.

Easy, calm, and practical.

Directions shouldn’t feel like a puzzle, just a path.

If the place is close I would just take them there, if far i pretend I don’t know it to avoid talking too much. It’s 2025, we can just simply check google.

Honestly, don't really remember the last time someone legit asked me for directions unless it was like at a festival, and they needed to know where the bathroom was. GPS is a thing.

If I know the area well then I'll tell them exactly how to get there. But if I'm clueless, which I usually am about most areas, I'll look up the destination on Google maps and let them know how to get there

A combination of 1 and 2. I give street names and distances, but I also include landmarks. The combination of the two tends to get people where they need to go, whereas just one or the other is likely to leave some people lost.

I start giving instructions and when their eyes glaze over I say "come on, I'm going in that direction" and walk with them.

I will use recognizable landmarks to augment any approximate distance/time info. Decades ago, we could travel the 35 miles to travel to see my mom's uncle solely by turning certain directions at each fast-food restaurant along the way!!
