Example. For another question I got curious if rape was an earthy anglo saxon word and ravishment a fancy French/Latin word. They both mean the same but ravish is definitely more up market. I could get away with saying to a girl I would like to ravish her.
Turns out both come from the same Latin root.
It further seems there wasn't an anglo saxon word for it.
Curious. I guess there was no raping in Anglo-Saxon days and it only happen after the Normam-French invaded.

6 moI check words in the online dictionary all the time, either when it's a word I'm using just to confirm I'm using it correctly, or if I'm reading something and unsure what it means. It's a good practice to have to rely on dictionaries.
As for an actual physical dictionary, the last time I touched or even saw one was probably some time in high school a long time ago.10 Reply
6 moProbably the last time I needed a very specific meaning and didn’t want to rely on guessing from context.
These days we Google everything, so reaching for an actual dictionary feels almost nostalgic but sometimes it’s the only way to get a clean, exact definition without distraction.
So yeah, not recent, but memorable enough that it reminds me how much we rely on shortcuts now.20 Reply

Almost every week, when I'm writing or reading something challenging, I consult an online dictionary. Maybe back in school, but I haven't opened a printed one in a very long time. Even though online resources are now faster, it's still pleasant to occasionally look up actual meanings.
10 Reply2.8K opinions shared on Other topic. It's been a long, long time. I am usually on my laptop and just google definitions.
You reminded, me though, I have a couple of huge Websters dictionaries. One is from the 1950s that my grandfather gave me. It can be interesting to look up definitions to certain words and see how they have changed over time. But I haven't done that for quite a while.12 Reply- 6 mo

Problem is those websites are run by people who change the websites "as needed" for whatever agenda including interviews of judges and political debates. They say we "corrected" but it was checked before publish, now just changed for corrupted.
