Most people are conditioned to cooperate with authority. From childhood, we're taught that police are there to help and that "good people answer questions." Refusing to talk can feel rude or suspicious, even when it's completely legal. People believe their innocence will protect them. Innocent people often think, "If I just explain what happened, this will all be cleared up." Unfortunately, innocence doesn't prevent misunderstandings, memory errors, or statements that can later be interpreted differently. Stress impairs judgment. Being questioned by police is emotionally arousing. Stress affects memory, reasoning, and decision-making. People often talk simply because they want the encounter to end. People underestimate how much they talk. Once conversation starts, many individuals keep filling silences. Police interview techniques often take advantage of this natural tendency. Fear of looking guilty. Many people worry that saying, "I'd rather not answer questions," will make officers think they're guilty. In reality, exercising the right to remain silent is a constitutional right and, by itself, is not evidence of guilt in court. Confidence in their memory. Psychological research shows that people are generally overconfident in the accuracy of their memories. Under questioning, they may unintentionally give inaccurate details that later appear inconsistent. Interrogation techniques. Skilled investigators are trained to build rapport, minimize the seriousness of the situation, appeal to conscience, or suggest they already know what happened. These techniques can make talking feel like the best option. Social pressure. Most people find it difficult to resist direct questions from someone in executive functioning is often compromised under acute stress. Working memory narrows, inhibitory control declines, and people become more likely to speak impulsively. Even highly intelligent individuals are susceptible to this.

Well, i think it depends whether you're talking about a traffic stop or an interrogation. Because interrogations are designed to wear you down. And there are many tactics cops use to get you to talk. In just a traffic stop cops use their level of power to suggest what they could do. I think a lot of people just assume that if i comply with everything he or she wants they'll see i'm innocent and let me be on my way. And i'm not saying cops want to harass you. But he or she pulled you over for a reason. And he or she is going to push until they find what confirms his or hwr suspicions. Even if they cop ends up being wrong and they end up getting you for something else.

Why wouldn't they? Treat the police like the enemy and they will treat you the same.
Im always friendly to the police even when im getting written a ticket. I learned that from my father growing up in Northern Ireland in the 80s, 90s and early 00s as a Catholic. Back when the police could legitimately hit you with the butt of their mp5 and lock you up for something you said that they didn't like.
