I am organized and orderly in many aspects of my life, but not OCD.
Oh man... am I ever. And it holds me back in life quite a bit. I know you're not looking for an AI answer, but I asked AI and this is what it gave me... some pretty deep insight in my opinion:
AI Answer:
You’re probably a perfectionist because your brain treats mistakes as evidence, not just events.
Not “I made a mistake.”
More like:
“This proves I’m not ready.”
“This proves I didn’t think hard enough.”
“This proves people could judge me.”
“This proves I chose wrong.”
“This proves I’m not as capable as I want to be.”
That is the core of it.
Perfectionism usually comes from a mix of these patterns:
1. You overvalue correctness
You seem like the kind of person who wants the true, best, most accurate, most optimized answer. That can be a strength, but it turns into perfectionism when “good enough” feels almost irresponsible.
Your mind does not naturally go:
“This works, move on.”
It goes:
“But is this the best version? What am I missing? What could go wrong later?”
That makes you thorough, but it also makes simple decisions mentally expensive.
2. You use analysis to avoid regret
A big part of your perfectionism is probably not vanity. It is regret avoidance.
You want to make the right choice now so you do not have to deal with the pain of realizing later that you missed something obvious.
So instead of choosing, acting, or finishing, your mind tries to keep gathering more certainty.
The problem is that certainty becomes addictive. You start needing more and more of it before you feel allowed to move.
3. You connect performance to identity
You do not just want to do something well. You want the thing you do to reflect who you are.
That makes your standards personal.
So when something is sloppy, unfinished, awkward, or average, it does not just feel like “the thing needs improvement.” It can feel like you are being misrepresented.
That is why imperfection probably bothers you more than it bothers a lot of people.
4. You are self-aware, but self-awareness turns into self-surveillance
You think deeply about your motives, flaws, personality, future, weaknesses, strengths, patterns, and decisions.
That gives you insight. But too much of it turns into constantly monitoring yourself.
You are not just living. You are watching yourself live.
That creates pressure because every choice becomes something to evaluate.
“Was that smart?”
“Was that weak?”
“Was that cringe?”
“Was that the real me?”
“Could I have done that better?”
That kind of inner monitoring feeds perfectionism hard.
5. You probably fear wasted potential more than failure itself
Bluntly: I do not think your perfectionism is only about being afraid to fail.
I think it is also about being afraid of becoming someone who could have been more but did not execute properly.
That fear makes you hold yourself to an idealized version of yourself. You compare your current actions to the version of you that is fully disciplined, confident, competent, attractive, independent, successful, and in control.
Then your current self feels disappointing by comparison.
That gap creates perfectionism.
6. You dislike fake, shallow, low-quality things
You seem to have a strong disgust response toward things that feel fake, badly made, dishonest, forced, or mediocre.
That can make you develop high standards naturally.
But the trap is this: when your taste gets sharper than your current execution, you notice every flaw. You can see what is wrong before you have the skill, energy, or consistency to fix it.
That creates frustration.
Your eye is ahead of your output.
7. Perfectionism protects your ego
This is the uncomfortable part.
Perfectionism can become a shield.
As long as something is unfinished, undecided, or still being “figured out,” you do not have to fully face the possibility that your real attempt might not be good enough.
So perfectionism lets you say:
“It is not ready yet.”
Instead of risking:
“I tried seriously, and it still was not enough.”
That is why perfectionism and procrastination often go together. Perfectionism sounds like high standards, but sometimes it is fear wearing a respectable outfit.
The simplest explanation
You are a perfectionist because you have:
high standards + strong self-awareness + fear of regret + fear of wasted potential + low tolerance for mediocrity + a need for control when uncertain.
That combination creates a mind that would rather delay, refine, research, rethink, and optimize than risk doing something imperfectly.
The blunt truth: your perfectionism is partly a gift, but only if it serves execution. When it delays execution, it becomes self-sabotage with good branding.
Your real growth point is learning this distinction:
Excellence means improving through action. Perfectionism means trying to avoid the discomfort of imperfect action.
I'm telling you... AI is crazy these days. It knows me better than I know myself.
Depends on what I'm doing. It's not really about being a perfectionist. It's about precision. In 3d printing I gotta be near perfect, same with computer related things. This is why in life I avoid trying to be perfect.
I hear you. Doing your best. :)
Yeah, I tend to gravitate towards being one.
Shows most in my schoolwork.
Same! 😂
I am not a perfectionist, I just try to do my best.
Sometimes I'm really a perfectionist, but depends, for some things I don't care that much about certain details.
No, I'm not, but I like to consider good options.
Yes, u should hav made it a poll.
Meh. The poll wouldn’t have cut it. Also, lately g@g has been shutting down mid-setup when I do a poll.
I wanted more than just a yes or no.
If its not right its wrong
