I think that applies to teenagers or general young people. However like you said there are exceptions and usually it's ok when they are in a relationship.

There is such a scenario where both sides like each other as people but they don't find each other physically attractive or at least are not infatuated with the other person
Also you don't have to break off all contact with someone just because they are not willing to bone you, sex is just one aspect of social relations
But if you find out that they don't like you back, sometimes you can resent them for it... Or if you find out they like you, you may feel awkward around them because you don't want to hurt their feelings...
People don't choose physical attraction, I can still like them as people
But some people may have a hard time accepting... And others may have a hard time being able to speak with their best friend who has told them they have a romantic interest to them
It gets easier when you're 20 and above and you're already used to it and have got past your gender-segregated socialization.

Actually, it was more of a rhetorical question and was not aimed specifically at you. But still, thanks for your input.
My point was that if a friend goes from normal friend to best friend. It means you see him more and devout more time to him and you get closer to him emotionally. So I was saying that if he becomes your best friend, it's that really, you are already in love with him. Else, he wouldn't have gone from friend to best friend.

The other factor is if there is attraction between them. I have women friends I'm not attracted to so it's easy to stay friends with them.
But when you spend a lot of time with a person with whom you are physically able to develop an attraction for... Like if you are bth straight... then I don't think it is possible to be BEST friends
