My boyfriend mimics things that I say, is this a red flag? Is there more to it?

My boyfriend tends to repeat what I say, especially when we are opening up to each other. It's his first serious relationship, he's had other gfs before me but, I'm his first serious girlfriend. I feel like he always has to say the perfect thing, or just repeats what I say whether it was a week ago or recently.
We have great conversation, but he always talks about us and our future (which is nice) but sometimes it gets overwhelming. Like last night I called him when I got home from hanging out with my friends I had a couple of drinks and was being super affectionate with him, apparently I was calling him Sweetie, now today all he has been doing is call me sweetie lol. Is he just mimicking me because he doesn't know what to do? Or am I making a big deal about this? I see a lot of potential in him, he's a great guy, I've been in a 6 year relationship prior to him. so I know I'm more experienced. It's just irritating because I want an original organic response from him, and I feel like he's just telling me what I want to hear. I'm 24 and he's 22.
