I was in a relationship but ended up falling in love with another man. I felt terrible so I ended the relationship and spent some time alone. I ended up getting back into my old relationship. The man I am in love with during this time has gotten into a relationship as well. Seeing him again and finding this out hurt, because of how much I loved him. I understood because of the situation, but I told him I probably couldn't be his friend. He then confessed that he loved me too, and that he probably will always feel this way even though that could end up being a bad thing. Part of me was glad to hear this, but the other part of me felt like this only made me hurt more. He wants to stay friends, but I feel like it's a bad idea for both of us. Can a man really stay in love with someone forever? Even if they aren't together? Part of me feels like he was just trying to make me feel better about us not being together. I also realized during all of this that getting back into my old relationship was probably a bad idea. I love my partner, but it's more like a comforting love than anything romantic. I don't know how things got so messy. Sometimes I just want to move far away and start over with just me.

If you're not even together, I don't think that anyone can stay actively in love with someone else. What would constitute that in the first place, if you're not even around each other, bonding or interacting on a regular basis, etc?

I think he meant that you'll always hold a special place in his heart. More like in a nostalgic sense than anything else.

He may he may not, though neither of you know what will happen in the future. See what happens when the going gets tough, then you will see how dedicated and genuine he truly is. When everything is going great, its so easy to say "I will always love you", but a lot of times people cannot deal w/it when life gets tough.

My only possible answer to this is that in my experience, the overwhelming majority of people who use the word "love" have absolutely no idea what it means.

Aside from that, what you're talking about basically boils down to a trust issue. If you believe he loves you and vice versa, that's all there is to it.
