Comparing me to his ex-girlfriend, good or bad?

CatherineTheSoSo
So the guy I'm talking to long distance (flirty guy friend if you will) compared me to his ex girlfriend the first time we had a deep drunken conversation. One of the reasons he broke up with her was to move back after grad school (he wouldn't tell me the full story but brushed past it) He did tell me it was on good terms.

She was the only girlfriend he had so far (long term) and they dated for a year. He claimed she wasn't that good-looking and that he was always attracted to personality more than looks. (She seemed prettier than I am - sleeker/thinner at least, but he does compliment my appearance.)

He has since stopped comparing me to her but I've always wondered since he mentioned it more than once. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? He also didn't tell me what exactly reminds him of her and I didn't push it. They've been apart for more than a year by now and he has been intent on playing the field (no relationships) while talking to me long distance.

Can anyone shed any light?
