It always complicate things. One way or another.
Even if they manage to keep it innocent and be just friends, when one of them gets a girlfriend/boyfriend, things will still complicate.

I'd say, since u both are such good friends of each other, just stop looking for another person and focus more on each other. Find out what each other really likes and try to figure out if you appreciate that friend enough, to sacrifice yourself for what he/she likes.
If you both manage to do this, true deep sincere romantic love will grow.
However, don't think that true love will stay without any problems or efforts.

Okay, so, to answer the question:

I truly believe that a man and a woman cannot be best friends unless:
1. They're both single,
AND
2. They're both asexual AND aromatic,
OR they're both gay/lesbian,
OR one of them is gay/lesbian and the other one completely accepts and respects that and doesn't want it to be different, OR -- MAYBE -- if they're both straight but neither one is attracted to the other (but that's dangerous territory, because physical attraction can change, especially for women).
