If one devoted their entire life to another person and lived only for them, would you consider that a good/noble choice or a bad/foolish choice?

Question

If someone's entire existence and reason for living was to serve ONE PERSON and one person alone (not any religious deities or higher powers; just one human being), how would you feel about that?  Would you have a positive reaction to that or a negative reaction to that?  Or do you  just not care ? Please explain your reasoning.

The closest thing to this I can think of is how, as late as the 1800s, sometimes a family would pick a child (usually a daughter) who would remain at home to take care of her parents until they died. This child almost always became a spinster and died single. There were also monastics, but the idea there was that through total devotion to God they would serve a greater purpose for humanity. Sure enough, knowledge was preserved in monasteries during the dark ages, a lot of people who would have been impoverished found refuge in them, and they were instrumental in the birth of Western science too.

I think that as a practical matter most people would want someone who is devoted to family and close friends, but also has outside interests and ambitions. This is certainly true of male-female relationships.

Not a good thing BUT real relationships are about team work and too many relationships today have 1 or more self-centered & lazy people trying to use the other. This is why these relationships collapse.

I agree with your view that giving everything isn't good but giving nothing doesn't work either and there's no such thing as a woman who doesn't need more than (the average) man. If your woman doesn't need anything, better check between her legs for a penis.

I don't see how being devoted to someone is the same as being their servant. That would be an unhealthy relationship, in my opinion. On the other hand, I'm devoted to my wife, but I'm certainly not her servant and she's not mine. We're equal partners.

As far as devoting one's "entire life" so someone, I know people who married their high school sweethearts, had kids, grandkids, and are still living happily together.

I also know people who remained single and people who got married and divorced.

I'm different. I didn't want to get tied down. I wanted to experience all that life had to offer. I finally met my future wife when I was 40 and she was 2 1/2 years younger. We got married two years later and have been happily married now for over 25 years. Neither of us had ever been married before and we had lived full lives before we met. She's an amazing woman who was determined to make her way in life and did well for herself.

When I look back on my life, I'm glad I didn't settle down earlier. Without the responsibilities of a wife and kids, I had priceless experiences. I don't feel like I missed out on anything.

So, to each their own. Everyone takes their own road to happiness.

We have been married for 35 years, but I am very unhappy, she has refused to let me have sex with her for the last 10 years siting Erectile dysfunction so she refuse to let me try again & refused to listen to what I was telling her but never in our marriage have I ever cheated on her.
And yeas I can get an erection. she says she will never give me a divorce. But I do have a girlfriend I am planing on meetting & having sex with. but I will never get married again. My problems are I am on some very strong meds & after one or two months after changing I am ok but she has too many limitations on our sex hers is the same old thing & will never change

I think it would only be a good/noble thing to do if the person you did this for also wanted to do the same for you. Otherwise, you set yourself up for unhappiness, resentment and heartbreak, as the target of your blind devotion acts towards fulfilling their individual happiness without consideration for your feelings.

An inconsiderate person is unworthy of blind support, and they should never receive it.

It depends on the person they chose. For example, if they chose a cheater or a liar? Then they are ridiculously foolish. But if they chose someone who would treat them the same then they made an excellent choice.

I think it would be a bad and foolish choice because there wouldn't be any time for self-growth. When I give too much attention to my pet dog she goes away and doesn't want to be around me.

It’s not foolish it’s unrealistic people have affairs, fall out of love, get divorced, people even die young. My grandma was married to an alcoholic, she never divorced him, although she never said I think it was her biggest mistake.
