It would be unprofessional not to wipe the disk especially if there logins to servers he does work on. And if he has signed any confidentiality agreements which is commonly done for projects you should not have access even if you are a girlfriend who needs to check up.
Wiping a computer is a pretty standard thing to do before giving it to someone new it gets rid of any possible viruses, malware and the like that could be hiding in the files n programing.
sldo resets everything back to its factory specs. It’s just overall easier and gives whoever it’s going to next a clean slate and computer to start fresh on.
its not about hiding secrets or anything. I’d never give a computer to someone without wiping it either.

Actually, the reason I would wipe it would be to give them a "fresh" laptop. Cookies can make a huge impact on your search results and you want YOUR search results, not his.
Also, if there's any malware, it's be good to get it off of there as well as any passwords and such. He may have emails come in from old acquaintances that are completely innocent that he simply doesn't want you to freak out over.
Plus, he may not want you to know he's into super kinky porn
I recently gave my old Dell Laptop to the daughter of a close friend. I always remove the hard drive and reinstall the OS before I give an old computer away. I label the drive and still have access to old data if I see I need it later. I also took the slow platter drive out and replaced it with a better SSD.
Naturally, he is going to wipe the computer. This is standard procedure whenever you hand over your old computer to somebody else. At any rate, you should never have access to his accounts and be able to act in his name, even as his girlfriend or even wife.
I use my laptops for work and they have proprietary client info on them. If I gave one away I would either DoD level wipe the drive of replace it and do a fresh OS install. If he is doing programming he might have similar info and, even if you log out a hacker can gain access and your boyfriend could be legally liable.
Also, a new install will operate more efficiently. Frankly do not understand your complaint.
It's probably not only his data on that computer but can be company data on it. He must clean it. Besides that way you get a fresh start and not a lot of bloating programming software and servers running, that he needs but not you.
Formatting an old computer after long time of usage can improve its performance since every software you install leaves some trash behind even after being installed. Also, the computer gradually slows down as various errors in the disk accumulate.
um no that most likely has a lot of personal information or important documents not meant for you, so i hate to sound rude but ill tell you now i don't believe he's hiding anything, in fact i'd probably wipe my computer before giving it to someone too.

Wiping a PC or phone should always be standard operating procedure before giving them away or selling them. Just basic good security for the giver and avoids clutter and broken crap for the receiver.
It's honestly standard to wipe laptops before transferring ownership. It gets rid of things that aren't needed and well it could be files that he isn't allowed to share. Not to mention removes all private data such as passwords and things.
I doubt he is hiding anything and well it likely has nothing to do with him not trusting you. But you need to be able to trust him as well.

Why would you want his computer to not be wiped? It makes the computer run faster, removes any potential viruses and bugs and it’s a fresh start. Not to mention you are getting a new computer and you aren’t happy 😂. If you want to go through his stuff, just go on his new computer when he’s done setting it up. If you do, make sure you give him your phone to browse through it as well just to be even.
It is common sense to erase your old data because hackers could steal it. But it's also likely he had a whole bunch of hardcore porn being erased and ex girlfriend pics/ videos too...
Honestly I would do the same as your partner did. There's private stuff in there and possibly confidential information that I don't want anyone to have access to.
We all have little secrets, that we wouldn't want anyone to know. First, like others have pointed out, it could be just that it has too much programming stuff on it. But even if he's hiding something it might be fucked up conversations with his friends, old stupid photos, etc. Not necessarily cheating.

You're his girlfriend, not his mother or fucking wife. Be thankful he's giving an insular bitch like you something for free.
Digital equipment should always be erased when passing on. Anything from credit information to personal information can be on it.

Some newthink-people are quite paranoid about ''privacy'' and ''safety''.
Indeed, in a microsoft labyrinth there are plenty of ''services'' installed (but not obvious to all) that can lead to unwanted information leaks.
It's not so much about 'secrets' - but when you give old clothing to the salvation army, then you wash it first - don't you.

I do think here there could be different possibilities... He might have deleted his data because:
1) he has things to hide from you in terms of who he talks to.
2) he has certain data that's work related that he doesn't want you to see.
Now both these two reasons come down to he not trusting you.
Take your pick but he does has something he's hiding.

It's standard practice for IT professionals to wipe data storage drives before passing them on to other systems or giving them to someone else.
So wiping a laptop before giving it to someone else is not unusual.

Not at all, he just doesn't want you to see what genre's of porn he likes to watch.
If you ask him nicely, he might tell you :)
