It isn't a big deal but I'd still be a little upset and they would have to earn their way back. The caveat being I'd also give them good chances to do so.

Even in a casual-for-fun relation I expect to be a little clued in. I don't expect them to discuss if they should go on that four month trip or not, but I fully expect them to tell me if they are even if only mentioning it in passing.
