My guy friend texted me, "I'm supposed to be sleep, but wanted you to know that I'm thinking about you". Is he really thinking about me?

So, I had this major crush on this guy for months and I had fallen in love with him a few months back. He told me he wasn't ready for a relationship, despite me asking him out and him saying yes, but canceled on me twice.

He mentioned how he has a hard time trusting people. His previous relationship he had a year ago with this girl pretty much broke him. They were together for almost 2 years and living together. She had cheated on him and he broke it off. He told me how he didn't want to be in a relationship bc of that and how he just wants to be friends. There were times we messaged each other late at night til 5-7 am.

Anyways, after texting him for an hour, we ended the conversation around 1:30 am. At 2:38 am, I felt my phone vibrate and saw a message he sent saying, "I know I was supposed to go to bed, but know I'm thinking about you". I asked what wrong and he said "Nothing. I'm fine, just thinking about you". I asked him why he was thinking about me. No response. I then told him that he must be sleep texting me. He then said, "I'm not. I care about you". I told him I cared about him too. I eventually went to sleep, but woke up in the morning to a message from him saying, "Love you, have a good day". I replied saying, "I love you. Have a wondeful work day". This is the first time he iniated an "I love you".

Why do you think he did this? Do guys really mean it when they say this? Because as his friend, I'm now confused!
