I have a friends with benefits who is asking to start a relationship because he wants to try unprotected sex. Im pretty sure he is lying in order to have raw sex. Is it unreasonable for me to ask to look through his phone before i take that massive risk?

I think that looking through his phone is not reasonable. Your concern about the seriousness of the risk is 10000000000% valid. Your health and body are truly important and the risk is, as you say, massive. But, asking to look through his phone isn't the right way to find/build that trust or even to prove that he is or isn't lying. What you see on his phone won't have context or nuance. If you think he's lying, that's really all you need. Either continue the friends with benefits and do unprotected if you're on birth control and he's proven clean of STIs (if you want the unprotected sex) or continue protected or don't. The phone thing won't help the trust issue or the relationship.

That’s not reasonable. Besides, what would you even be looking for? Evidence of sex with someone else? If you don’t trust him, then you don’t have unprotected sex with him. It’s that simple. You don’t ask to invade his privacy. Relationships don’t flourish without trust.
