What would you do? Would you wear such a suit that is not your style just because your partner bought it?
- 302 opinions shared on Relationships topic.
+1 yThis is when it’s appropriate to exercise boundaries.
If you don’t like the suit, tell her. If you don’t want to wear the suit tell her. What you shouldn’t do is criticize her for getting you a suit. Just tell her exactly how you feel about the suit. Whether you wear it or not is entirely up to you.
The unhealthy response is making up an excuse to not wear the suit or lying to her. Relationships are about understanding each other and respecting each others boundaries. Boundaries are what make a person themselves and how you respond to your own triggers when your boundary is crossed.00 Reply

If I didn't like the suits I'd tell them what was off, or that the suit was just straight shitty and return it. Except one navy and cream one that was terrible for work, but had this 60's to 70's vibe to it that was great for going out.

Tell her it's beautiful but it doesn't look good on you or that's how you feel because you're not used to it because I think it's waste of her efforts, thoughts and money if you're not even going to wear it or even if you do, you would do... you would do it reluctantly I'm sure she wouldn't want that.

+1 yBe open and be honest. If you don’t like something someone gave you. Please tell them so they can return it. Don’t lie and say you like something that you don’t. Don’t be mean about it.
But hey. Maybe it’s special and you can say this ain’t really my style but because you got it it’s special and wear it anyways.
If someone doesn’t ask you a question. You don’t have to say anything. But don’t lie

+1 yI think you could wear it to events at their home but not other events. That way you honour them, without wearing an outfit that does not reflect your personal style in public.

+1 yOne of my biggest conflicts with women is them buying gifts. They mess up because they have this bullshit idea that surprises are better. If they do let you pick what you want it gets limited to what they want to get you.
Example... I played guitar and would post it on youtube... doing covers and shit. Stuff like Amon Amarth or Metallica. I already had 3 electrics and 1 acoustic-electric guitar. I needed recording equipment to make better videos or at least to start recording music. Forced gift and it had to be a guitar. ... long story short I can't even figure out how to make videos anymore and I no longer play at all... but I have that stupid fucking guitar I never wanted. I argued and argued... shit didn't help at all. Now I'm just an asshole on G@G talking shit about that stupid fucking guitar on the wall.

+1 yIt is important to be honest and forthcoming with your partner in a relationship.
If you don't like the suit he bought you, it's best to tell him nicely and honestly.
You can thank them for the gesture and consideration, but express that it is not the style you are looking for or that it is not to your liking.
This way you can discuss the situation and work out a solution together, perhaps by swapping out the suit for something you like better or returning it for a refund or store credit.
Remember that honesty and communication are key to maintaining a healthy and happy relationship.

+1 yI find it's not all that important to keep to one style in particular. And often when I've tried out new styles that I find it hard to identify with I usually gets used to it after a few times. It's nice to open up your mind to different looks.
It's also good to be less tense about how others see you. Mainly, the things that matter are the actions we take and I would argue that being able to be comfortable in many lights is a strength.10 Reply- 377 opinions shared on Relationships topic.
+1 yI wouldn't wear it. But then I can't see any partner of mine buying a suit without consulting me. Anyone who knew me would know better. A suit is something you need to pick out for yourself. There may be cases when someone else is good at it, but that's obviously not the case here.

+1 yThat's indeed a dilemma. It was meant well, but went wrong.
As a precaution I have always made clear that I ONLY wear clothing that I tried on myself before purchasing it.
It's ''too late'' in your case, of course.
How about: you wear it anyway, and add some own piece of decoration on that one day. After your birthday you make sure that an ''accident'' spoils it (moths, mildew, natural disaster, repo-man and such)
00 Reply 1.4K opinions shared on Relationships topic. I think I would tell her.
I really wouldn't want to hurt her feelings, but she spent her hard earned money on it, so it would be a shame not to wear it.
You know how she is, some are fine with exchanging things, others not so much.
I would rather my wife take something back and get something she would actually use and enjoy.
At least I tried.00 Reply
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yHave you tried it on yet or just looked at it? If you have tried it on and don’t care for it, you might say, “hey hun, I really appreciate the thought you put into this but I’m afraid it just doesn’t quite fit. Do you have the receipt? We could go choose one out together and I’ll model for you!”
10 ReplyConsider expressing gratitude for the thoughtful gesture, then gently communicate your preferences and suggest exchanging the suit for one that aligns more with your style, ensuring that your partner's feelings are respected.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 y@stanley Are you for real?
There's a limited number of suit designs - traditional & trashy. The real difference in price tag, etc. is the material and the brand name. Otherwise it's literally down to traditional or trashy.
Traditional covers a wide variety of suit looks.
Trashy is a $50 blazer that idiots think is a suit.
What do you prefer & have you even TRIED it on or think because she's trying to make you look decent it's "not your style"

+1 yI would tell her, there’s no point in you having something you don’t like or her feeling as if she did something really sweet when she didn’t. Tell her how much you love the effort and maybe suggest you go shopping together for a replacement you like that she likes you in?
00 Replyyep, don't use logic here like you would with a male friend. the fallout from how hurt her feelings with it will absolutely not be worth it. Take one for the team... your team, including your little guy. If you don't wear it again after that unless she asks you, she'll probably get the message and not buy you another one

u +1 yIf it was a gift, then there should be a gift receipt with it. That way you can take it to the store and exchange it yourself.
Otherwise, just tell her kindly what style you prefer and go to the place with her to make the exchange.

+1 yDont wear it but dont tell her you dont like it just make up an excuse. Cuz i bough my boyfriend a top and it didn't look good on him but he used to force himself to wear it and i felt so sorry for him.
00 Reply2.5K opinions shared on Relationships topic. Just be straight up and honest in thanking her for her generosity, but pointing out that it's quite simply not your style, and perhaps you could go together in exchanging it for something more suitable.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yA partner buying you something that isn't your style is a red flag. My ex wife was bad about buying me gifts she wanted me to have instead of what I would want, and then she'd make me out to be the bad guy if I didn't treat it as the most precious thing I'd ever possessed.

Opinion Owner+1 y@Johnny4473 she was later diagnosed as a covert narcissist. It's one of their techniques for devaluing their S. O. Basically a catch 22 where if you go along with it, they know you're cowing down to them, and if you don't, you're an ass.
She bought you a birthday suit huh? Well there's nothing wrong with wearing your birthday suit in the bedroom, but don't wear it out in public...

+1 yWear the suit, even though it’s your party, as men we gotta understand that it isn’t always about us, if it would make her happy to see you in a suit for one day, that’s your girl bro- wear it. I guarantee she went throughA lot of trouble finding the perfect one that makes you look handsome in her eyes. It’ll make her feel special, women put so much more into things than we do sometimes- redirect that part of the relationship brother.

00 Reply What's the issue with the suit? I'm sure she wouldn't be offended if you wore part of it but not the whole thing, but it really depends on why you don't like it.
00 Reply1.2K opinions shared on Relationships topic. The only suit you should be wearing is your birthday suit, and she can show you hers.
