Good plentiful sex for a start because a lack of that makes either partner start looking elsewhere. Even the familiarity of partner sex can have either partner yearning for the excitement of someone new. It is quite hard to compete against just the ideal of someone new that a work colleague might represent. A girl at work might always be happy and amusing and make you desire that in your wife. The grass is greener etc etc.

One factor that seems to significant is how much much the partner recognizes what disturbs the other - a bad day at work for example.

A lack of competitiveness in the domestic environment. We expect that at work and don't want it in the domestic world.

Home should be a place of succor is a net summary of the last two points. If it is not, then we will seek a new after work environment.

That is the flesh of coupledom but the bones is a joint vision of how each of the couple want life to be. Building a family or traveling the world are two that are incompatible. The long term goals need to be joint goals.

I think some people just mesh well together. A lot of times you don't find out how well you get along until actually staying together. Hard to know beforehand, so I think a lot of luck comes into play.
