Is it normal that my partner tracks my location?

At the beginning of the relationship my partner asked us to share GPS locations with each other. We are in a long distance relationship. Just the other day my partner admitted that when I drive from place to place he checks my location to see if I arrive to my destination safe. He also admitted to checking my location when I’m out walking with others.

Is this normal? Is it coming from a place of care, or control?
