My dog was terrified of my new boyfriend. (Now ex. We were together 3 months) He (my dog) went from being with me all the time to never coming downstairs. And having tail between his legs. My ex swears he never done anything to him. My dog is a small terrier breed and yes quite nervous. But he usually likes a person after he has met them 2 or 3 times. This was first boyfriend I've ever had though with my dog. My nan always used to say though to never trust a person if animals don't like them. Do you think this is true?

could be a matter of luck.
Not liking by us can just be typical dog behavior/procedure and their upbringing. Dogs can be territorial, can feel or be protective, and some can have anxiety as the underlier or the paired thing with the previous two. Some dogs can be exposed to many situations and types of people that they will just be used to plenty of people and also just a gentle giant. Unless ofc MAYBE some situation escalated to a perceivable threat.
I say all this after spending extra quality time with my sister’s dog and observing others.
The biggest factor is I’m a really nice person and once or twice other dogs barked crazy at me. I’d say they were rabid if anything than it being me as a rotten egg. 😂
Barking can also be habit.
Loud sounds. ANY movement.
BUT my relative’s doggo isn’t the brightest of breeds. Some are quite intelligent and very expressive. I’d say if it were a breed like that, and they deciphered between people, then yes, this could be something to rely on. Many times dogs can mostly “sense” through pheromones of people or some slight body language. They can’t tell a person’s intentions nor mind read. Only specifically trained dogs can sniff certain items they register as perilous. Drugs and such. Possibly hints of guns or so.
I think it’s just possibly luck. But I’d probably try to use some better judgement and for the most part always believe my dog. I mean, just be cautious of others. Especially as a female. Not everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt when it’s our safety and well being at stake. Also be alert and observant.. and smart! When dating new people you’ve never met before. 👍

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yNo because dogs a kind of mindless. Specially the little ones. The smaller ones are “mindless”.
I have family members who have those smaller dogs. And they bark at anyone and anything for any reason. We don’t even have to be evil. Any such movement makes that thing bark. And they bark like they hate you.
Also when I went to the terrace in my old apartment to just hang clothes.. again a dog would bark at me for no reason at all.
Yeah, I’m not taking the opinion of a mindless dog who by the way are willing to eat their own shit.

+1 yOne dog went from hiding behind the couch whenever I so much as yawn on the other side of home (not fearing anyone else, and this started since the first time it saw me) to now following me anywhere I go, abandoning anyone else when I'm seen or heard. I did nothing to try to change the first version, I was glad at least that monster was afraid of somebody back then. Maybe dogs just sense large balls if your ex listened to this guided meditation like I did: ᅠ

1.4K opinions shared on Relationships topic. No but I do take it at heart because I'm a pretty good person and no matter what when I get around dogs or even cats they come to me kids even come to me but when I had pets I would watch them interact with people and basically the people I didn't like my pet didn't like they can feel the energy of the human being because they are they see things in a different dimension cats go into nine dimensions dogs something like the third dimension or something like that I forget but I believe in that pets can read people better than people can read people

Diving into the world of love and pets, huh? Your nan might have been onto something with her advice! Animals, especially dogs, have a knack for picking up on vibes and energy that we humans sometimes miss. They're like little love detectors with fluffy tails. If your dog transformed from your shadow to a ghost whenever your ex was around, it's like your four-legged buddy was trying to tell you something through his own version of ghosting.
Though it's not always a one-size-fits-all situation, if your dog generally warms up to people but didn't take to your ex, it's worth pondering. Maybe your pooch sensed something off that you couldn't see or, potentially, your ex's energy just didn't jive with him. It's a furry food for thought that our pets might just be the most honest judges of character we have. So, next time around, maybe consider a casual meet-and-greet with your future beau and your canine buddy to see how they hit it off. After all, in the dance of love, it's all about finding the right partner to keep both your heart and your tail wagging! 😉11 Reply- +1 y
Your nan's advice holds some truth in many cases. Animals, particularly dogs, can often pick up on subtle cues and vibes from people that humans might not notice. While it's not an absolute rule that if an animal doesn't like someone, that person is untrustworthy, it's still worth paying attention to your pet's behavior and reactions to people.
In your situation, it's understandable that your dog's sudden change in behavior around your boyfriend would raise concerns. Dogs are sensitive creatures, and their reactions can sometimes be indicative of underlying issues. It's possible that your dog sensed something about your boyfriend's demeanor or behavior that made him feel uncomfortable or threatened.
However, it's also essential to consider other factors that might contribute to your dog's behavior, such as his own temperament and past experiences. Additionally, three months might not have been enough time for your dog to fully adjust to your boyfriend, especially if he's a nervous or cautious dog by nature.
While your ex may genuinely believe he didn't do anything to harm your dog, it's essential to trust your instincts and prioritize your pet's well-being. If your dog's behavior significantly improved after your boyfriend's departure, it might suggest that there was indeed some underlying issue between them.
Ultimately, it's essential to consider all factors, including your dog's behavior, your own observations, and any other relevant information, when assessing the situation. Trusting your instincts and prioritizing the safety and comfort of your pet is crucial in any relationship, whether it involves humans or animals.

+1 yAnimals are the best judge of character.
I recently had someone talking BS about me to a family and they didn't share it. Their dog has always liked me. The dog would bark at this person they thought was their friend "pinky it's _______! Why are you barking."
It slipped what he had been doing and they floodgated everything to me. Fortunately I was able to prove the opposite with actual evidence. The man won't show his face now. They actually said "We should have trusted pinky."10 Reply - 335 opinions shared on Relationships topic.
+1 yAnimals have a good sense of people. I have one cat who is timid and shy, doesn't really like new people. So I don't use that against people or think they're awful because she is scared of them. She's scared of most people. That is her normal. However, my other cat loves everyone, life of the party wants smooches and attention from everyone, if he didn't like a particular person I would be weary of them because that is abnormal for him.

4 mono, but it is an indicator. the dog is reacting off what it learned.
I had a dog that was afraid of men take well to me... because I'm not threatening. dogs sense better and quicker than we do.. because we have our big brains getting in the way.

m +1 yAnimals are often amazing at spotting things, you have dogs used to check of certain conditions which they do even before routine medical picks it up.
My cats are fairly savvy to people, however are right sods if they get attention and if someone pampers them, they would hand over the house keys. 🔑
A dog suddenly becoming nervous or scared around someone does indicate something has happened, they don’t just do it on a whim.
00 ReplyI would say i come across many dogs and i have met most dogs love me a lot but a few dogs have not liked me at all one bit so like what does that mean? I think i do not beleive it. It is possible if a dog does not like somebody maybe be cautious about it but no need to avoid someone.

+1 yYes, a dog can pick up on ques, like actions... anger, etc etc. Folklore they can read thoughts, however, or if someone has an evil spirit. They also feel neglect or intimidation. He might if kicked your dog and that was que. I wouldn't look too much into it.
10 ReplyYes, animals can sense when someone is rotten. Trust the dog, don't trust him.

+1 yNot true, guard dogs don't like any stranger at first no matter who they are and some dog breeds love everyone at first sight and want a cuddle

+1 yI don't fully agree with that statement as I believe it depends on the dog breed. For instance my dog itself is afraid of everyone, even our neighbours (one of them comes over weekly) and some familymembers.
I also wonder how your boyfriend reacted the first time to the dog, as this sometimes can make a big difference in how a dog responds in the future.00 Reply- 505 opinions shared on Relationships topic.

+1 yI love dogs and I have had them most of my life. And I get where this idea comes from. But I think it is more of a fantasy than a reality. The people my dogs seemed most uncomfortable around were people who didn't have much experience with dogs so they don't know how to relax around them. I think the dogs sense this and it makes them edgy too. I think that is what is going on in most cases where dogs don't like someone.
00 Reply Yeah, I think it's true.
If there's something I've realized is that dogs are sensitive to illegal drug use and they are sensitive to strange and hostile behavior.

1.5K opinions shared on Relationships topic. Broadly yes. My cat likes some people but not others. Unless your dog was very jealous (some are) it is not hard to make friends with a dog. It could be your ex didn't like the dog rather than ex boyfriend doing something to him.
00 Reply332 opinions shared on Relationships topic. I've not had any experience with dogs regarding this but animals do sense something off in a person I used to have two horses and horses can read a person right away and even more do once the person gets on their back.
11 Reply- +1 y
Really? I used to go horse riding at a riding school. And there would be some horses that didn't seem to like me and some that did. So I always tried to book the same nice horse lol. Maybe animals, much like people, have different traits they are attracted to? But if all animals hate a person then they must have really bad traits.

I'll also add that you should never trust someone who doesn't love dogs. Ever.
