Why would someone turn on and off their message read receipts constantly?

I work in a business as an assistant and was messaging this new foreign business partner. The manager was also “messaging” him via WhatsApp, but it was actually me sending the messages, yk like an assistant. I was told what to send etc. But I noticed that the business partner’s read receipts was being turned on and off since my chat with him has no read receipts or “blue ticks” and the manager’s chat has them. I have my read receipts on. I don't know I found it quite strange, and just wanted to pop on here and find out if this is something that people commonly do? He was quite pleasant with me via chat and not rude in any way tho.

What kind of crappy company allows text messaging for business purposes. That would mean instant dismissal where I work. Not professional.

I understand why you’d think so. Our corporate culture isn’t as formal as yours which is fine I suppose. The business has been in existence for over 50 years and has been steadily growing. Technology has also evolved and thanks to Whatsapp Business, we found that utilising messaging at certain times to be efficient when communicating with foreign partners, especially when time zones are different and quick responses are needed. Creating group chats has really boosted synergy and by extension effective problem solving. We also utilise Microsoft Teams, emails and phone calls.

I wouldn't look for any rationale, rhyme or reason for that kind of thing. They're doing it because that's just what they're doing. Any more analysis is probably giving it too much thought.
