Why would a guy turn on his read receipts?

The guy I’ve been seeing turned on his read receipts last night while we were texting.

I asked him why and he responded with, “because I realized I had them off”

I texted back, “Oh ok, I thought it was because I was bugging you.”

He then left me on read which really stung.

I proceeded to text him again and said, “Ok, have a good weekend Austin.” (He’s going out of town with his cousin).

He then responded, “you too, I’m currently watching my best player in fantasy play terribl” then a second text that said, “Me”

Based off the last text it’s obvious he wasn’t sober, but I’m still worried he’s trying to tell me he’s over it.

I usually have read receipts on by default, just so I can tell when the person I'm talking sees my messages.

Overall I think you're looking too deep into this. Calm down and just let things play out lol, it sounds fine.

No when you send read receipts it only goes to the person you’re texting. He doesn’t see when I read his texts.

Ahh, yeah that's right. Forgot since most of the apps I use have everyone's read receipts on by default.

Nah, I still think you're overthinking all of this. I mean okay, yeah the whole six months without anything official is a red flag, but that's only one thing, and I wouldn't say this specific situation is any reason to worry any more.

That is how it goes sometimes. From everything you have posted it sounds like he has been honest with you about everything. If the way he communicates is too stressful to you, then discuss it with him.

Ok I guess what’s bugging me is the fact that when I vocalized that I thought I was bugging him because of the read receipts he did not confirm or deny it... he just read the text

Okay, first of all, if it is something important that needs to be communicated properly it CANNOT be by text. No exceptions. Do it face to face, or the minimum over the phone. Second, you have to stop the "thought I was bugging you" type of texts, comments, whatever. That makes you come off as insecure and needy.

This is the first time I’ve sent him anything like that (I know you probably won’t believe me but I try to keep my anxieties contained on here).

Well I just shot him a text asking if he might want to get together this upcoming week and I now know he has seen it. Is this him trying to show he’s ignoring me or that he’s seen it and will get back to me?
