What does it and if a girl starts calling you "dear" all of a sudden?

I have known this girl for months. We are classmates and we usually work together so I'm somewhat aware of her speaking patterns. Today we were just arguing and teasing each other and she dropped the word "dear" (referring to me) like 4 or 5 times. Now, I know some girls use that word everyday and don't mean anything by it but I've never heard her refer to anybody like that before. I pretended I didn't hear it and just continued. Do girls just make up names like that? I'm not even "dear" to her since we argue ALL the time, any ideas?

There are different possible scenarios 1. She's getting closer to you and therefore is trying to act more interested and more intimate 2. It's just a nice word she picked up recently and is practicing it on you 3. She is giving you hints that she's interested in you.

Teasing and flirting are signs of admiration by the way. ;) If she only uses this word with you, then there's definitely something going there between you. :)

Just curious... what if it's your boss that's started doing this with you? I know that sounds really bad but I've known her for about 6 months now. I think I'm stuck in a bad situation right now. Any advice?

Oh I forgot she's only a couple years older than me, I'm not sure that makes a difference or not.

You know most times A girl say a word to a guy, she doesn't really mean it. But as for your case you said you haven't seen her mentioned that word to any other person except you, that means she's gradually having an affection for you.

I wouldn't read anything at all into it. She was just joking on. Dear isn't the most common normally used word.
