My Understanding on the Symbolism of Fire

I believe everything in the bible has two meanings

Salt is both a symbol for humility and a symbol for judgment - but not carnal or ego based judgment but spiritual judgment which makes people merciful and protective and respectful rather than prideful and competitive and vain

Light is both a symbol for sweetness and a symbol for connection

Darkness is both a symbol for war and a symbol for separation

Now I will discuss fire

I know I asked about fire just 40 minutes ago but it took only that long for me to figure out its meaning

So to me fire is a symbol for passion and for intercessory prayer though in the bible intercession may be removed and fire could be purely an allegorical representation for prayer -whether intercessory or not

This is why in the bible the ones who offered unholy prayer or unholy intercessory prayer which is manipulation and blocking or unholy passion - was sentenced to death

Also Paul said our God is a consuming fire so our God is a consuming prayer for holiness and our God is a consuming passion for righteousness and love and our God is a consuming intercessory prayer for the salvation of souls

The bible says fire never satisfies itself but always hungers - so prayer is always wanting more prayer and passion also has endless passion for holiness and intercession is endless since eternal salvation lasts forever

Do a google search right now of every instance where fire is mentioned in the bible and substitute each use of fire for the word prayer / praying / prayed / prayerfully or passion / impassioned / passionate

And you will see that fire represents passion

Im not very religious but I feel my thoughts may add in some way. I've always felt that fire has positive and negative aspects. It is forever hungry and will consume all if allowed. But it can also bring light to the dark and can be a beacon to light the way for the lost.

I fell passion is the same way. Passion can lead us to fall in love or devote ourselves to a just cause.

Passion can also lead us to anger or destruction.

Passion and fire are both representstions of pure power to me. Power can be used for good or for evil and it requires guidance to channel power toward good or evil.

After all very few people light a fire for no reason at all. Usually we light a fire to keep warm or to cook food. Or maybe to light the dark, or to give friends a place to gather. Or maybe we light a fire with the intent of destroying something that no longer holds a purpose, or to dispose of something

I know my thoughts don't tie into a biblical perspective, but I felt they might be useful anyway.

Well, while that is a good interpretation, from everything i have studied to this day, and it was a lot, fire is a bit more complicated and profound than just passion.

In my opinion, fire is the primal representation of the spirit, and the spirit is, according to what i could interprete from my studies, the individual consciousness, or the ego centered consciousness, where individuality, dreams, hope, and yes, passion as well, reside.

On the contrary, water is linked to the soul, that is the connection we have with god, or god´s presence in our life, and is the way through which we can then sense and receive the will of God for our own particular life.

But that is just another viewpoint to try to help you develop a bigger view, but great question your question about fire and it is good that you actually go that deep in the search to understand God´s will and meaning for humanity and probably your own individual life.

Salt is also preservation and seasoning. "You are the salt of the earth." in Matthew 5, for example.

Light is also symbolic of the illumination of the Gospel "You are the light of the world" also in Matthew 5.

Fire is also symbolic of God's Spirit as in the burning bush, the pillar of fire that led the children of Israel by night in the Wilderness and the tongues of fire in Acts.

I honestly think you've put more thought into the bible than the fella who wrote it.

I think he wrote a bunch of weird little stories and then realized nobody would read them because they weren't particularly well written. So he just told everyone they actually happened.

In the eastern Russian Orthodox tradition, they thought hellfire to be an analogy and not a physical thing. They suggested that people who dont live with faith experience the presence of god as a torturous burning fire and they experience that way because that's how they relate to god subjectively, and those who are comitted to god experience his presence as a comfort and light, which is supposedly heaven. They think of them as states of mind.
