What we can learn from John 13 when Jesus washes the disciples feet

Today I watched a Sermon where the pastor talks about how Jesus humbled himself by washing the disciples feet

And how we should humble ourselves by washing each other’s feet

i don’t claim to know everything about washing feet

But you can encourage people / build up their confidence / help them see things from a more loving perspective / warn them about the dangers of wasteful living / help them know God’s word / show them God’s love / Give them hope about their lives / help them forgive and accept themselves / make them more shrewd or wise in their decision making / counsel them on how to behave in their social role / warn them about bad people / give them practical advice about their issues based on experience and research / listen to their problems / give them coping methods for dealing with their difficulties / share your knowledge when you see them ignorant

our role is not to fix or save people but to mirror God so we can be seen as the arms and feet of Jesus who share His love and kindness with the world

i also think it’s strange that Simon Peter was Jesus most beloved disciple and Judas Iscariot who betrayed a Jesus was Simon’s son - it shows the spiritual bond is even deeper than the family bond and vicarious gifting is not enough to save somebody despite our duty to practice it

It shows Jesus was humble and He wanted to instill humility into us also. Being humble is a good thing. Pride is of Satan but humbleness is of Jesus.

The simple explanation is that Jesus was giving a tangible example of Master as servant as a contrast with the common understanding.

Different Simon. Easily discernible in the Greek but. sometimes lost in translations. John 13:3 speaks of σιμωνος ισκαριωτου (of Simon of Iscariot) while immediately after in the same context John 13:6 speaks of σιμωνα πετρον (Simon Peter) differentiating between two different people in the immediate context. Simon Peter was of Bethsaida, not of Iscariot.

I'm sorry, yes there are a lot of good stories people can learn from. Just like there are in Mother Goose books.

I think if people are going to keep using the Bible as a reference for today's problems, they need to update it to be relatable to today's problems.

The Bible is centuries old. It's time to get it updated to modern times.

When i was a believer in church it was always taught that way, as an act of humility to make people see he was approachable and willing to serve. Its also meant to be an example for his followers to do the same.

Basically a way to tell his followers, your never too good to help someone else.

The other message that's found in this teaching that rarely seems to be taught is that the act of Christ cleaning his disciples' feet mimicked his cleansing of our souls. He was sent here to serve, not to be served, and he serves us by redeeming us from our sins and cleansing our souls.

You can only show people something if they give you permission to do do so. I do like this particular scripture because Jesus depicts his teaching through action.

However, you can't change a person's perspective. The thirsty must be willing to come to the well and drink for themselves.
