Why people are wrong about the Ten Commandments

The bible says there are ten things that Moses wanted you to do to build your relationship with God. Those ten things are the Ten Commandments. Most people with even a casual familiarity with Western religions has at least heard of it before.

The thing most people do not understand is that obedience to the Ten Commandments should only be performed under a context that endorses self-respect and respect for your relationship with God.

I had many people tell me I’m a bad person because I did not love my abusive mother or father but Ecclesiastes 8:5 says obedience to God’s commands does not lead to harm, meaning I should not trust my parents or bond with my abuser in an emotional way where they are able to harm my mental and spiritual health.

Jesus said if a parent is bad, you honour them for God’s sake and not for theirs and the New Testament says that you are allowed to rebuke those who offend you and you are only required to forgive if the person is sorry for their behaviour or stops sinning against you.

The way I see it is, your service to your family should not exceed your service to God so if your family slanders you or tells you that you are evil for believing and honouring God, you are allowed to rebuke them and hate them, because you have to love God enough to hate your parents if they try to sabotage your salvation and your ability to serve God.

For me, honouring an evil parent means washing the dishes and giving them medical support when they are sick. It does not involve internalizing their abusive remarks or smiling at them when they slander you and steal your money.

You are allowed to be hostile if they provoke you, in the same way that Jesus was hostile to the religious leaders when Deuteronomy said not to disrespect a religious leader. The command not to disrespect a religious leader should only be observed if obedience to the religious leader does not compete with your obedience to God. In the same way, you should only honour your parents when your attempts to honour them, do not compete with your desire to honour God and does not violate your mental and spiritual well being.
