I saw a question on here asking about the Ten Commandments, and it reminded me that many people don't know the Sunday school version of the Ten Commandments that they remember are actually not the true Ten Commandments.
According to Exodus Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt and came to the foot of Mt. Sinai. Beginning in Exodus 20 God descended upon the mountain and left many commandments to Moses. Not once is the phrase "10 Commandments" mentioned, nor are there only ten given. Instead I counted about 50, but they are as follows:
First there's the ten you're familiar with, but it follows with making an altar of earth and not building stairs or God may see your genitals. The Laws continue in Exodus 21 with laws regarding the treatment of servants and personal injuries. Hebrew male servants are to go free in the sixth year; whereas, female servants do not. This is also the section where "an eye for an eye" comes from. Exodus 22 continues with property and general social laws. If a burglar breaks into your home at night and you kill them you are protected, but if it's after sunrise you are not. As a society you can't allow a sorceress to live. Exodus 23 is the laws of Justice, Mercy, Sabbath, and Festivals. Exodus 24 is the consummation of the covenant. Moses then goes up the mountain for 40 days and nights. The next several chapters are issues regarding worship, building altars etc. Finally in Exodus 31 Moses begins to descend the mountain. Unbeknownst to Moses as he was on the mountain the Jewish people created a golden calf and started to worship it in Exodus 32. Moses comes down the mountain and casts the stones of the covenant into the earth and breaks them. Following which Moses had the Levites put everyone to the sword and God sent a plague to tear through presumably whatever people remained. Now finally in Exodus 34 we get to the important part. This is where we actually get the Ten Commandments.
- Do Not Make Treaties With Those In The Surrounding Land
- " Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous"
- Do Not Make Any Idols
- Celebrate The Feast Of Unleavened Bread
- The First Offspring Of Every Womb Belong To The Lord
- No One Is To Appear Before Me Empty Handed
- Keep The Sabbath
- Celebrate The Festival Of Weeks And The Festival Of Ingathering
- Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning
- Do Not Seethe A Goat In It's Mother's Milk
Exodus 24:27 "Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments."
So there you have it. Clearly the Ten Commandments you thought were real weren't. That's what's really real.

First MyTake hope it wasn't too disjointed.
