Exodus 23 and Deuteronomy 5-11 both say God will not drive sin from your life all at once, cause if He did, the opposition you would face would be too severe.

Exodus 23, suggests you would face desolation through the absence of emotion and an over fixation with sensory concerns if God changes you into a lifestyle of non idolatry too quickly.

Deuteronomy 5-11, suggests you will encounter desolation through the absence of love and understanding, and an over fixation with pride and wrath if a person acquires obedience and self purification too quickly.

Deuteronomy 27-30 teaches that when God promotes you, he does it slowly, because you need wisdom and respect to back up and sustain your new success.

I think these might refer to more gradual changes in a healthy way. Like losing weight via diet and/or exercise, or even fasting, ie. working for it. But not by starving yourself, induced vomiting, or liposuction.

But some things I think are perfectly fine quitting cold turkey. Like removing soda from your diet, quitting drugs or alcohol, refusing to watch anymore porn, abusing those closest to you, failing to keep up with chores.

In any case, establishing good habits and fighting through lingering temptations is the righteous path.
