Define hovering in place. Relative to a fixed point on the ground? It's following the rotation of the Earth and won't appear to move. Relative to a fixed point in a coordinate system oriented about the Earth's rotational axis? It would have to account for any difference in latitude between starting point and ending point.
Relative to a fixed point in space? Depending on the time of day, the season, the orientation of the Sun/Earth ecliptic plane relative to the Galaxy, and the respective trajectories of all those bodies, the helicopter may get smashed into the ground or left behind in space as the Earth moves away in its orbit around the Sun. There is a very small chance of colliding with something else in space, but that decreases rapidly over time as the helicopter is left behind by the Solar system as it orbits the galactic center and eventually the galaxy itself as it drifts through a universe so incomprehensibly big that the very concept of 'destination' breaks down for a helicopter lost in the vast emptiness.
That has nothing to do with the shape of anything.
First the helicopter already has momentum from moving with the earth. Second, atmospheric conditions force the helicopter to put energy into moving. If the wind velocity is zero it actually means it’s moving at the same radial velocity as the earth so to counteract that you must move the helicopter relative to the surface of the eArth and at a different velocity than the wind.
Lastly, I’m asexual.
Are you mother earth?
It's been an honour to talk to you, thanks for the opinion anyway
Odd question. Earth is round moves at 15 degrees per hour. Helicopter would have to have anough fuel to hoover and wait but then how do they know which direction the earth is moving on its axis. Too many other factors to make this statemetn true in relation to the helicopter.
Thry can do this it's called orbit. If they are high enough they orbit.
Flat, nobody like to be called round by the way
I beg to differ.

Rather than bothering to explain the science to you because you would just think I'm a sheep lying to you, I'm going to give you an experiment to try... and hopefully you'll understand the concept after watching it in action...
Go grab something simple like an extra shoe. Now get in your car and start driving down the road at a decent speed. While you have some momentum, drop the shoe straight down and observe.
Does the shoe drop straight down, same as if you just been standing still? Or did the shoe continue to move in the same direction the car was moving? Think about why the shoe behaves the way it does, and then you'll realize why the stationary helicopter isn't really covering ground.
Healthy skepticism is great. But so is trying experiments for yourself so you can see that the field of physics isn't just made up. Cheers.
Helicopters CAN hover in place and wait for their destinations to come to them provided their in the right place relative to the Earth's rotation. However, that will take a long time, because they have to lose the momentum they had when they were connected to the Earth spinning with it. Even aircraft traveling long distances must account for the Earth rotating underneath them in order to accurately chart a course to their destination.
If close enough to a pole they could. Of course by “in place” you’d mean that from the perspective of an outside observer they aren’t rotating. From the perspective of those on the ground they’d be appearing to move very rapidly unless close to one of the poles. And they’d have to move rapidly through the air. However in the helicopter they could notice that the sun appeared fixed to them. The closer to the equator the faster they’d need to move relative to the air.
I'm pretty sure it's lot more complicated than that... Chances are, as the Earth moves some part of its orbit moves with it...
The stupidity of some people on this site, never stops amazing me.
The earth is flat with a round bottom. Checkmate, everyone.
False. The helicopter is moving along with the Earth. It's like if you're on a plane. You're moving, but objects appear perfectly still.
False, since a helicopter govers in the atmosphere and the atmosphere turns together with Earth. So you cannot wait for your destination :-(
You're forgetting that the air moves WITH the Earth, although somewhat slower. Otherwise there would be a constant perceived west wind travelling at over 1,000 mph.
No, because the atmosphere is moving along with the planet.
The movement of the atmosphere relative to the planet is zero, even when from the space it's moving.
That's actually not true. Aircraft traveling within the atmosphere must still account for the Earth rotating underneath them to accurately plot a course, especially over long distances. Long distance shooters must also account for the rotation of the Earth since their projectiles are no longer connected to the ground. Over short distances, you still have momentum from when you were connected to the Earth moving in the same direction, but the longer you spend in the air the more that momentum diminishes.
If you can find a helicopter with enough fuel I'm sure you could put this to the test.
Only if they could hover above the atmosphere that is moving (and moving them) as well. So they would need a different hovering mechanism since no air up there.
I suppose so, yes. However, it takes time for the Earth to spin. So, even if it was true, it'd be a while if the helicopter's destination was far enough.
Apparently nobody taught you about gravity. The helicopter may be hovering, but it is still affected by gravity and held in place.
Don't feed the troll
the earth is flat with a dome
what anyone else says is stupid or a lie
don;t hate lol
The helicopter has to escape the gravitational pull of the Earth first.
There's a thing called atmosphere.
