CHANGE MY VIEW: Can someone rationally explain to me why Islam is not a backwards, regressive, primitive, dangerous ideology?

So, I posted this in another question:

"Islam is literally one of the most backwards, retarded, primitive ideologies on the planet! Most religions are pretty bad, but Islam is quite literally the worst one of all! The 'let's kill gays just for the hell of it' type. And as a woman, it's especially bad. Most Muslims are that way because they were brainwashed into it (hell, you can say that about all religious people). But CHOOSING to follow the most primitive, idiotic ideology on the planet (that's not social justice based)?"

This isn't even getting into the marrying female minors, the "72 virgins" stuff, the murdering people for drawing cartoons stuff, or 9/11.

I got a lot of butthurt downvotes from that one. But I'll concede I might be wrong. If I am, please enlighten me. I'm serious. I'm open to hearing why Islam is a calm, rational ideology, and why it is compatible with the West and Western values (equal treatment of all people, science and intelligence over faith and emotion, logic and reason over what an ancient book says, not treating women, gays, and minorities like trash, etc).

No cowardly chickensh*t anonymous opinions, though.

I have known 2 Muslims in my life and both were peaceful and claim that the terrorist types do not practice true islam. But I have read for myself in the Koran that it is permissible to rape, kill, steal from , destroy, and rule over non-Muslims (infidels), so in my estimation, they are what I call “liberal” Muslims. And as far as the Muslim world goes, it’s the only place where liberalism is a positive.
Everytime I point out the violence of Islam, it’s defenders point out the crimes of Christianity in the past- The Crusades, the inquisition, etc. my response is always, “can you give me something within the past 500 years please?”
Pay attention to what is going on now in Israel. The Al-Aksa masoque has been burnt. This is after the Saudis have made the public statement that the Jews can have the Temple Mount as it is no real religious significance to Islam. Which is an amazing statement from a Muslim country. End time prophecies are unfolding before our very eyes. All the prophecies have been fulfilled to usher in the tribulation. Get ready.

Surah 3:151: “We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve (all non-Muslims) ...”

Surah 2:191: “And kill them (non-Muslims) wherever you find them... kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers (non-Muslims).”

Surah 9:5: “Then kill the disbelievers (non-Muslims) wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in each and every ambush...”

Surah 3:151: “We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve (all non-Muslims) the “we” here refers to god. He is the one who has the ability to to condemn us.

The rest is taken out of context. This refers to the disbelievers who have threatened the lives of muslims trying to spread the message. It is only self defense. There are many verses that encourage muslims to be peaceful towards everyone and even many that show profit Mohammad peace be upon him to be merciful towards the infidels that unjustly tried to murder him

Islam’s basic teachings are to have patience, pray to god, give to the poor, treat people as you’d like to be treated, repent if you’ve sinned, and mind your own business "‏لكم دينكم وليا دين" you have your own religion and i have mine. If you’re really curious, try and read the Quran for yourself, don't listen to the media, don't label some muslims’ actions as the heart of islam, and see what you think about it for yourself.

But what if I don't believe in a deity that no one has ever seen before, that we can only know of from multiple-passed-down stories. I think it's silly to put all of your life in the hands of something that has no proof of existing. Also, why would one need Islam to do that?

Uh, no. Not without some compelling reasons to do so, first. It is not exactly a quick Sunday afternoon read. This would be the case for me regarding any religious scripts.

There are many scientific predictions in the Quran that were impossible to be found out in the time of profit Mohammed. Other than that, faith is different to religion. You say that you can’t believe in a God you’ve never seen, i say that it is unfathomable that there should be a universe this magnificent that just existed by mere chance. There must be something infinite upon which all the finite things we can see fall back to. If you were actually this perplexed as to why all muslims believe, then you would read the Quran for yourself and try to understand why.

You obviously don't know many Muslims. Out of almost 2 billion Muslims in the world, the vast majority are the kindest, most generous people you will meet. I can attest to that. They range from very devout/conservative to very liberal, just like followers of any other religion.

This is a false assumption. I'm black. I grew up in West Philly. A good 20-25% of the people I lived around were Muslims. And although I don't connect the two together inherently, they were among some of the worst thugs you could ever meet. Muslim women somehow are even MORE thuggish than Muslim men (where I'm from).

So I reject that false equivalency and counter your anecdotal evidence with my own. We're now back to zero.

Muslims are people just like all people. Among them are the good and the bad. Muslims may not always set a good example, but that speaks nothing of Islam itself. Just because you know right and wrong does not mean that you always follow it perfectly. All human beings can attest to that.
