A sermon at church mentioned having high self esteem is a sin because it puts faith in one self over God. But how can one be kind to others if they are not first kind to themselves?
They might be conflating it with vanity. High self-esteem from my understanding is rooted in having very realistic views of oneself and motivated by self-improvement, so it's not like someone who rates themselves a 10/10. That's already an indicator as I see it of someone without high self-esteem since no one with high self-esteem would think themselves perfect.

He was wrong, or you misunderstood.
He was probably talking about "pride" or "vanity", and not "self-esteem".

arrogance, selfishness, entitlement, unhealthy grandiose self worth is a sin cuz it will harm others, lead person to do bad stuff etc
but in my opinion having high self esteem isn't a sin

he said the reason, when that self esteem puts faith in your own ability alone. otherwise good.
I love women who have a very high opinion of themselves, but I don't find this quite as appealing in guys.
