Tolerating Intollerance

I've always been a liberal thinker. I've always thought there should be equality under the law for all genders, sexual orientations, races, sexual identities, and all human beings in general. I've always been against descrimination, and calling myself a liberal used to make me proud. That time is no longer.

So I stumbled across an article today that stated that a Pride parade has banned drag queens because it might offend transgendered people. Let me say that again, a transgender parade has banned drag queens because they might feel offended. Now I'm all for people feeling safe in their own little gatherings, but since when does banning a harmless group of people based on nothing more than their desire to wear a certain type of clothing help promote tolerance? This is just one of the many liberal failures over the past few years that have made me ashamed to be one of them, the promotion of tolerance through intollerance. Talk about an oxymoron. So we're actually supposed to take the transgender community more seriously and respect their sexual identity when they can't even respect the wishes of a few straight men to wear women's clothing? What kind of bizarre, stupid reasoning is that? Is the trans community really that frail and petty?

I've always been a supporter of the LGBT community, trans included, but this nonsense has got to stop. I see no reason why I should verbally express any support towards a community that bans the way someone dresses over a greivance as petty as a few people's hurt fee fees. Your feelings are not a moral ground. They do not give you power over how people act or conduct themselves. They do not give you special priveleges or rights, and I and the rest of the world, are not obligated to care about them or to bow to your insecurities. If you think that you should ban the way someone else dresses because it might offend your own sexual identity, you have become what you hate. Progressiveness 101: Do not be hypocritial. Congradulations, you're now the laughing stock of the progressive world. And a complete idiot.

I completely agree! This isn't any different from that Hispanic transgeneder woman being booed out of the White House by gays. I have a liberal mindset as well and I strongly believe in freedom, therefore it bothers me when someone can't express want makes them happy (as long as no one else is getting hurt)

Let's get this straight.

Liberal definition of tolerance=I support and promote certain groups and feel other groups need to be discouraged. If you do not support the same people I support and oppose the same people I oppose, you are intolerant.

Actual definition of intolerance=the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with

Liberals who get angry over "racist" or "homophobic" or "sexist" things are intolerant.

Do you believe you have committed a crime by thinking differently than a vocal minority? I don't believe the vocal minority's thoughts, beliefs, or most actions are bad; my tolerance, however, is not enough. There is never enough. There must always be outrage; there must always be a villain. It's unfortunate that so many people are seduced into hatred by the feeling of superiority they gain by condemning others. Usually the wakeup call comes in the form of a condemnation directed at themselves.

I'm not hoping for change though. That will never come. I'm happy to embrace defeat and join the totalitarians in the happy march to destruction and hate.

This is the problem with liberalism, at least as it is today. It treats you as if your special because your diffrent, this inturn creates a mindset of entitlment which then results in the special group acting in the manner it has been treated. Basicly like there better then anyone else and do not need to empathize with others, that society should yield to them not the other way around.

Yes it has, the irony is that it has done the inverse of what it intended, it placed the oppressed (relatively speaking) on a pedestal. That then allowed them to be the oppressor (again, relatively speaking) Being in a minority group does not make you any better then being apart of the majority, given the chance as you have noted they will make the same mistakes as the majority did. So in the end you have swapped one oppressive ideology for another equally oppressive ideology. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" is essentially what liberalism is. Its why I do not affiliate with liberalism (I don't think one should affiliate with any one sided group, liberal, conservative or otherwise.) Its basicly the polar opposite problem, if you have issues with one group, going to the exact opposite position on the pedulum swing isn't really going to be that much better.

I think it is ridiculous that drag queens can't dress, but drag queens usually attract a lot more attention, so I could see that as being a reason. People just need to either restrict everything or let everybody go free and do what they want if it doesn't hurt others.

Im liberal, and im proud to say it. Banning drag queens is really stupid. But one issue i have ran into a few times is that people think i have to tolerate offensive and intolerant people. If someone is being racist, homophobic, sexist, or so on is it really right for me to tolerate that?

Being offended is not an excuse to be intolerant. You have to have good enough judgment to recognize when something you don't approve of is harmless, and when it's actually worth the effort to fight against. Women in skimpy outfits on a subway add may be offensive to you, but it is that model's right to dress scantily and put her body on a billboard, likewise for that company to sell it. You do not have the right to interfere with freedom of choice. Lynching, on the other hand, is obviously not OK. Hopefully you are wise enough to recognize the difference.

In any case, the event coordinators in Glasgow reversed their decision on the ban.

I've always interpreted it as there should be discrimination of any kind. You can't make offensive things illegal. If you say something offensive you have to deal with the consequences, but there should not be legal ramifications. Because banning what People can say is a slippery slope. That's like the don't ask don't tell policy the military used to have. If your gay and join the military don't tell us. We want to assume your straight.
