Acceptance- its importance and relevance

Have you ever heard someone say, "I won't be friends with that person because their politics differ from mine"? Despite living in the twenty-first century, intolerance is sadly not going away.

Too many times have I heard such things as:

He seemed like the perfect man for me, but then I found out he was a Democrat/Republican!"

Or

I was friends with this person, but we fought about politics so much that we couldn't settle our differences."

This isn't specific to politics, either. People are still being victimized for their religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and so on.

I find it very disheartening. Not everyone will agree with you, and you won't agree with everyone. This is truly what makes humankind interesting- freedom of will. So why do we do this? Let's give peace a chance. ☮

Also I agree-- to an extent (hear me out).
I think we should not shun people because of what they do or how they vote or believe. I think that should not necessarily mean we cannot be friends with them.
BUT it should not have to accept what everyone chooses to do as right and okay. Just because we don't think they have leprosy doesn't mean we have to condone what they do. People will disagree about lots of things like that. And if it gets to be too much but neither will let up then it would be best to avoid that subject with that person from then on. If necessary avoid them if they won't let up.

Because people should have free will and that should be allowed. But at the same time people have free will and what they do with ut don't always be a good thing. And also people have free will to choose who and what they exercise it around and towards. So it's difficult to tolerate some things without giving up the free will to have a different belief than that...

I mean yeah, on the one hand, you should try to work out differences, but in the other hand, who you hang out with is your choice and you shouldn't be forced to tolerate someone who you aren't comfortable with.

Websters Dictionary states Tolerance as:

the ability to accept, experience, or survive something harmful or unpleasant.

So telling some one to be tolerant of your lifestyle is saying your lifestyle is harmful or unpleasant (i. e. bad or evil)

I try to be tolerant but sometimes my bias comes through - I think if I was to remain friends with someone of differing views we may have to avoid the contentious subject - I don't know if it is a gag or not but apparently on the old sailing ships when crews were months at sea, there was an unwritten rule not to mention politics, religion or women to avoid arguments.

But re your take, yeah, it seems everyone is divided into camps, and won't listen to any disagreement, regardless of how reasonable. Even on GaG, I have been called a libtard, and a right-winger. No one seems capable of rational analysis anymore - it's all about the spin. Politics has become like religion, a matter of faith that is not subject to science.

He's a hunk! Where did you meet him? and I do agree that people need to have more peace to preserve relationships and maybe just maybe they might actually hear their points if they are not shoved in their face.

Tolerance by its very nature means putting up with that which you do not agree. Too many seem to demand endorsement. If you already agree, then tolerance is not necessary.
