Double Standards in Feminism

First of all I'd like to say I'm not a feminist (it has mostly to do with my belief that women aren't equal to men in all regards, that there are certain things only men can do.) My beliefs are however not relevant to this myTake. It's written solely to list some of the double standards that have arisen or/and have been influenced by feminism.

I wouldn't directly blame feminists for all of these, but I would say they're a side effect. A lot of these did exist before the feminist movement but they became much more common afterwards and I don't think that's entirely a coincidence.

• The most obvious is that an alleged criminal, if he's a guy, is treated like a criminal, but feminists believe most female alleged criminals are actually victims and need help.

• Scantily-clad women in magazines and TV commercials objectify women and promote rape culture yet demand women should be able to wear whatever they want without being objectified.

• Women should be allowed to wear whatever they want, even if it's really sexy and revealing however Matt Taylor wearing a t-shirt a picture of a sexy women is sexist and misogynistic.

• They claim that women who have a lot of sex are sl*t shamed, but then attack men for having multiple partners because they're "objectifying and using women like meat."

• If a man finds out he isn't the father and skips town because he doesn't want to make any more payments, he's a dead-beat dad. He shouldn't be allowed to get a paternity test proving he isn't the father, since that would be disruptive to the harmony of the family.

• Women get full child custody by default, fathers desperately fight for their children.

• When they make false accusations and men go to jail or die in jail, well, it's a tragedy, but she's sick. She needs help.

• Women should have a right to opt out of parenthood if they want however men should have no rights to opt out of parenthood.

• Male-dominated fields are proof of sexism against women but female-dominated fields are okay.

• Female sexuality should be open and embraced. Male sexuality is violent and should be contained.

• "All women should have the right to believe what they want" . Anti-feminist or non-feminist women are labeled as stupid with internalized misogyny.

• They feel women are viewed as needy and clingy if they go after a guy, and that women should be allowed to approach men. They think guys feel "entitled" when they approach women, and guys need permission to approach women.

• They fought for the right to vote but didn't fight for the responsibility that men had that was to sign up for selective service in order to receive the vote.

• They complain that female victims of domestic abuse don't receive enough government funding. Men make up about half of domestic abuse victims and receive virtually no government funding.

• They believe gender is a social construct of the patriarchy to oppress women and privilege men yet they regularly advocate for trans rights on the grounds that transgender people are born as one gender in the wrong body.

• Patriarchy keeps men from talking about their feelings, and that men should be allowed to express their feelings. Feminists protest Men's Conferences and say that men are "mansplaining" when they explain something.

• Society teaches boys to be misogynistic however single-parent mothers are more common than ever, and most teachers are women. (If most boys learn from single-parent mothers and women teachers, who is teaching them to be sexist?)

• A drunk woman consenting to sex was raped by the man. A drunk man consenting to sex had poor control over himself and raped the woman.

• A woman may commit a crime of passion if she's on her period so she shouldn't be punished as severely but saying a woman is being too emotional because of her period is misogynistic.

• Objectifying women is wrong however objectifying men is not wrong because it "doesn't happen as much."

Now I know not all feminists are the same and not all feminists have the same views but you can not deny that these double standards still exist. I'm not hating on women for advocating equal rights, but not when doing so results in the loss of the rights of men.

Good points. I consider myself a feminist, but I think the feminist movement has just gone crazy. Feminists in English-speaking countries say that he/she pronouns are sexist and promote so-called "gender-neutral language". Meanwhile, feminists in Spanish and French-speaking countries complain about the lack of female adjectives and add gender-specific nouns. I'm not aware of feminists of the Chinese language, but I do know that written Chinese has added the he/she pronouns. I think the deeper issue is changing people's minds about perceiving gender in jobs and activities, but they usually attack the language with little substantial evidence that gender pronouns themselves have any effect on people. I do not think gender pronouns or language is to blame for sexism, but rather, gender stereotypes and preconceived notions.

I have also seen no point in birth control as being related to women's sexual health. Sure, they may prevent unwanted pregnancies and disease, but if more men and women just choose abstinence, then birth control wouldn't be necessary. Sex is a personal choice, so the responsibility to safer sex should fall on the people engaging in it, not the government or your employer. People should pay for birth control with their own money, and if they can't, tough luck. They shouldn't have sex.

Being a responsible driver means you should pay for your own car insurance, do not text and drive, do not drink and drive, carry a valid drivers license at all times while driving. Having sex responsibly means be willing to protect yourself from unwanted sexual contact and pregnancies, and be willing to pay for the choices you make. If a person wants to have sex, then that person must consider the costs. Can't pay? Choose abstinence. It's free, gives no side effects, and offers 100% protection. That, or masturbation. Both are very safe choices. Phone sex is okay, but that costs money.

While I agree with everything you have said, I'd like to discuss one point in particular:

This is absolutely the biggest hypocritical thing I have EVER seen!
Women are all about pro-choice. They want to be able to choose whether or not they can abort a baby. Notice that it is the WOMAN'S right. It doesn't matter at all if the guy wanted the baby or not! If the woman does not get an abortion, he is forced to pay child support if she goes after him. Now, a lot of women in the circumstance would 'let him off the hook' and raise the baby completely on her own. But there are also a lot of women that won't do that and expect the father (who doesn't want to be a father) to provide. That same woman will heavily restrict the father's visitation (if he's paying, he has a right to see his child), which is also wrong. The woman should have no choice whether or not her child sees his/her father (unless he's unfit - take it to court).

There is something very wrong with that.
Why do women get the choice, but males are forced into it?

In a fair world, it would be the mother's choice, but the father could opt out. If he doesn't want the baby, he can sign off his rights and excuse himself from all financial responsibility. It is not humane to force a mother to have an abortion, so by no means would I ever suggest that.

Then there's the flip side... what if the mother wants to abort but the father doesn't? He's just completely screwed over.

My biggest problem with feminists is that they claim they want equal rights, but they still want preferential treatment.

In an equal world, if the father wanted to have the child and the mother wanted to abort, she would carry the baby to full term and then sign her child over, with no financial responsibility. Maybe the father would have to pay for all medical bills involving the child the 9 months in the womb.

It is really unfair that the father has no rights regarding his child - when he can see it, or even whether or not he has it in the first place.

You can't claim equal rights but deny the rights of the opposing party. It doesn't work that way.

Exactly. Which is also an issue. Never said it wasn't.

The context here being the guy, how he expresses his sexuality, what views he has on women in regards to his own sexuality, if there is any sense of entitlement, etc etc. Male sexuality can be violent when it's forced on women (or other men) in one way or another but it is not violent by default. Hence it depends on the context.

As for false accusations of rape (what does that have to do with slut shaming, by the way?) different studies claim different things, but I think the most widespread percentages are between 1-5% of rape cases being false accusations. So, not a lot.

#2. 50% of the 2 million women injured yearly are due to domestic violence,. 150,000 requiring hospitalization. Men who are injured by women are injured during her own self defense and injuries are rarely fatal or end in death different from women injured by men. men initiate majority of violence, including rape war genocide , homicide, torture, thats why women are looked at as victims of violence. the criminal system, IS fucked up and many people get put in jail for crimes they dont commit, but the disparity between black prisoners female AND male, are far greater than the discrepancy between men and women. you can't simply disregard racism because it doesn't fit into your idea of a point you're trying to make.

Mansplaining is a term coined from a book called 'Men explain things to me' written by an author discussing her experience and relating to other women experience in dealing with men unable to not treat her like an ingenue despite her accomplishments and professional standing. it was specifically invented to denote men condescending women. as a social group. again social phenomena not 'double standard'.

(not sex, gender). in addition feminists have different views. not all are social constructionists. which imho is not any different from naturalists. its all based on there being a natural tendency., which we dont know enough to be able to argue yay or nay seriously.

Also another thing you could have mentioned is that women currently have more reproductive rights than men do.

For example: Lets say Bob and Sally have sex and Sally gets pregnant.

Scenario 1: Bob wants the child, Sally doesn't... result: Sallys wishes win. She gets to terminate the pregnancy. Or she has a second option, she could have the child and put it up for adoption (without being legally required to even let Bob know that the child exists)

Scenario 2: Sally wants the child Bob doesn't... result: Sallys wishes win. She will have the child and Bob will have to pay child support.

So in summary, whether a woman is responsible for a child, is her choice. For men, they have to go along with whatever the woman decides.

Just graduating college and it felt like everyone there in a place of higher learning lacked the ability to see both sides of the story and at least see it was imbalanced and unfair. Let's put it in short: discrimination is part of human nature, it is that part in our genetics, ancestors and our traditions and customs that will influence in our personal choices in order to survive.

Feminism did not being the vote. Women could vote before feminism in more states than they couldn't. There were also men and minorities which could NOT vote during these same times. It wasn't a matter of sexual bigotry but of social political bigotry.

@Punkbuster107 Hate to say it but it's definitely the minority, if you feed a line that girls should get to do whatever they want and when someone mentions consequences or double standards they're 'sexist' not too many women will disagree. Hope you find one!

Yes! I love how she understands, she just gets it! I see so many women that just don't want to see that they are being hypocritical because that would mean they would have to admit they are. It is nice to see there are some women out there like you and her that are still level headed. :)

Yeah well I don't mean to come across as offensive but I was starting to give up on women but this take has given me a bit of hope there are some good women out there that it is just hard to find them. :)

Yeah, it is just that I seriously get fed up with some of their BS, especially when it is actually made up and based on no fact at all or they know they are in the wrong and will still treat me like rubbish just because they do not want to admit they are wrong. Anyway I don't want to bitch about women on someone else's mytake lol. I have just had countless bad treatment and been picked on even when I have done nothing wrong. It is just refreshing when I see women like you. It really is nice. :)

Yeah. It is so frustrating. I have nasty looks, scowls, frowns, comments, been laughed at when I have actually done nothing at all. I was introduced to a girl by a friend and all I said was "Hi" and then it got back to me she had called me a creep behind my back just from that.:(
