You Can't Win the Politically Correct War

In case you weren't aware, apparently not putting holiday, or specifically Christmas decorations, on your Starbucks cups is tantamount to you hating Christians and wanting them to burn on a spitfire, but I digress. In the current climate in which we live, you have to be pretty careful with what you say and do. If you sort of erroneously say something off the cuff or are filmed doing something even one person may find offensive, you are splashed on the local news, you become a viral thing, you become a nasty meme, your comments and actions get torn apart, you are blasted on social media, someone posts your facebook address and home address and telephone on the web so people can harass you, you may lose your job, your house may be vandalized and on and on all because you did something that may be seen as politically incorrect or maybe you honestly just made a mistake.

People are both more sensitive these days for one and they are more socially aware these days. Add that to the fact that they have access to a medium that did not previously exist to previous generations with which to spread this new information. Imagine if our forefahers had had an internet, would things really be so dramatically different? We all know of sitautions where someone bringing a story to light has actually helped someone or made a situation better, but for every one of those, there is an equally negative reaction where things spiral out of control and an innocent person is dragged through the mud or even violently hurt because someone took it upon themselves to try and take them down in the interest of political correctness or wanting to be a "helpful citizen."

The thing is, you can't really win the politically correct war whichever side of the fence you are on. Sure, we can shout to the rooftops that we should all stop being so sensitive and PC, but clearly that isn't a viable solution because information good or bad about a situation can spread so fast and facts and information are rarely checked by the time a story is on Ellen and the local news and the protests begin. If you are the type which feels everything and everyone is wrong about everything and you easily hop on bandwagons, then you won't win either, because there is truth and there will always be something that is going to piss you off for no reason. So we're in a stale mate and unless we plan on instituting restrictions on social media and media and the internet as a whole, this war will continue to rage with no clear winners.
