7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Anonymous

I don't deny the fact, that nowadays, almost every country in the world has been influenced by American culture and lifestyle by a bigger or a smaller degree. Those are the things I like, and I dislike about it.

Things I Like:

(In alphabetical order)

1) American food and desserts

Yeah, I like those old-school American burgers, and I like donuts and muffins as well.

2) Gun laws

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

First of all I should mention, I'm not conservative, since most people who are pro-guns, tend to be conservatives. Politically I lean towards anarchism actually. But I believe, guns should be available to the general public and not be a privilege among the few. I don't like much the fact where I live, gun control is very strict. Everyone should be allowed to carry a gun for their own safety. One day I might get robbed, what am I supposed to do if I'm unarmed? I don't rely on cops, so I have to defend myself somehow.

3) Lots of festivals and events

There are many festivals taking place each year in every State. That's a nice thing. And back in the good old days there were so many great music festivals...not anymore though. Also if you were living in the US, there was a huge chance to see your favorite bands, live at their peak of their careers, since almost every band that makes it big, goes for a US tour, including non-American bands. Well but as I said, that was happening only in the good old days. Who cares about current bands anyway?

4) Movies, Cartoons and Comics

From the biggest part of 20th century though. I like this vintage style of comics, modern comics are very overproduced in my opinion. As for movies and cartoons, well were there any significant ones from the current century? I don't think so. I always have to say this: 21st century killed art.

5) Rock Music

From the 80s and from the second half of the 70s mostly, I should mention. Some 60s and first half of the 70s are good as well. Since 90s Rock became absolute rubbish, and it sounds even crappier than girly Pop. But unfortunately it didn't happen only in America, but everywhere.

6) Schools

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

From what I've seen in movies or in pictures, schools seem to be very nice there. They seem to be pretty luxurious. In my own school, we didn't even have soap in the restrooms.

7) Skyscrapers

I have never seen a skyscraper in real life, and in the US they have a lot. I 'd like to visit one, and go on the top floor and stare from the window, up there. Sounds like some astonishing experience.

Things I Dislike:

(In alphabetical order)

1) Gym culture is more dominant

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Unfortunately, it's a culture that becomes adopted more and more by other nations as well. So in other words, if a guy is not jacked he's considered less than a man. Not only by other guys who happen to be jacked, but by many women as well. This is something I disagree, because no straight man should be doubted about his masculinity, even if they are short, skinny, having feminine features, etc. As long as they are straight, nobody has any right to doubt their masculinity. In other words who is more manly in your opinion? A skinny straight guy, or a jacked gay guy?

2) Heightism

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Whilst it's true that in most nations women would like the man to be taller than them (still there are some of them who don't care about height) but as it seems, in America this concept is more dominant. There are many women who not only want the man to be taller, but taller with a significant difference. For example, I've seen cases of a 5'3" girl, considering short a 5'5" guy. Guess the reason why it happens so much, is because taller men are viewed more masculine since traditional gender roles exist by a greater degree (see below).

3) Income matters a lot

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Judging from what I see here (I believe GAG represents the current American youth, since most people here are young Americans, aged 15-25), income matters a lot. I've seen stuff like, I wouldn't date a guy who makes less money than me. Guess this might drop under the Traditional Gender Roles category, since men were supposed to work and women stay at home, but in our days why should it matter who makes more money anyway? Also another thing that should be mentioned is, that people who make more money, tend to look down on others who make less than them. Not something I'd call nice if you asked me.

4) Marrying at a young age

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

I remember a guy here who was just 25 saying, I'm 25 and it's pretty uncommon to find people my age who are still single. Well I don't get why some should rush their lives like that. At 25 you're still a young man/woman. I'm 25 as well, and I can't even imagine myself being a dad. Well to be honest I don't want kids anyway, but even if I wanted, I'd think I'm too young for it, at 25. Especially in our days.

5) Racial differences

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Unfortunately, it seems like in America, your skin color really matters. There are still many white people who consider themselves superior than black people, or they often say they'd not date outside their race. Not only for preference reasons though, but for other reasons like, I don't want my kids to be mixed. Not to mention cops are prejudiced towards black people, more than anywhere else.

6) Prostitution being illegal.

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

Guess it's only legal in Nevada among all States. But it shouldn't be illegal all around the world. First of all it's a woman's choice to convert into prostitution, it's not something immoral, and it's not forced either. And I believe that's the reason why there are so many virgin guys in their 20s, or even worse there are some who are in their 30s as well. Sorry if it sounds sexist, but women can get laid much more easier than men even if they are just below average. Most chances are, that a guy won't say no if a woman offers him sex. But the same thing, doesn't apply for guys even if they are above average. So prostitution is good for guys, in order to not be virgins anymore.

7) Traditional gender roles are still dominant

7 Things I Like And 7 Things I Dislike About American Culture, Lifestyle and People

It's something I don't understand. I have made a similar MyTake about it recently, here. It's really sad to see, young people believing in those roles. And if they don't they get shamed about it, by others who believe in those toles. For example if a guy doesn't pay for a date, he is cheap. Maybe the problem is not him, but the girl who is looking for a provider? Anyway, I don't get why in America they stick so much on them.
