I hated that gods not dead movie. What a crock of shit. At the end the professor freaks out because"God took everything from him," well if he believes that then he's not an atheist.
However, my only real concern with atheism is that there is evidence, more so in just the greater cosmos of the universe, that there may be a higher power. I'm agnostic; I just can't affirmatively say there is or is not a god, I think confidently saying either is a little foolish
Yet, I see it ad nauseum... Endlessly. And everytime these awful excuses for arguments get shut down. And they just keep coming. Oh wells... That's the internet I guess.
This is a list of pet peeves. What are the reasons why atheists shouldn't have to hear these things? They seem like excellent opportunities to make your points and convince others of your views.
Regarding morals, I truly am interested in understanding the basis for determining good, bad and indifferent for atheists.
first i'm not an atheist at all but to address you morality question... do you need to believe in god to know that murder is wrong? do you need to believe in god to know that rape is wrong?
plenty of god fearing people do things things that are bad. of course plenty do good
you don't need a god to tell you that you should respect your fellow man, that stealing is wrong, etc, etc
@madhatters4 I appreciate your reply, but you're not actually answering *why* you judge those things to be wrong. I'm not trying to trick you or anything. Absent a supernatural authority, there must be another basis for a moral code. I can think of several, and I am interested in a real life instance of it, not just my own speculation.
This isn't a list of pet peeves. This is a list of things christians believe are good questions and arguments that are actually poorly thought out and ignorant attempts at gotcha moments that pop up endlessly.
@madhatters4 Respectfully, personal feelings is terrible basis for morality. Laws and books are just written versions of someone else's judgment, so we still don't know the basis for that. I just wonder if atheists think a sense of morality is something innate, something objective, or what. I truly want to know because I know atheists who live by a moral code but I literally don't know where that code comes from.
why would personal feeling be terrible. regardless of where it comes from we ultimately internalize lessons and then decide (based on our feelings) what is moral or not.
"books and laws are just written versions of someone else's judgment" very true. just like the Bible or any other holy scripture as no one was taking God's dictation
asking where a moral code comes from is a philosophical question that is 1000s of years old. Plato literally has a philosophy on Ethics. he existed in a time of polytheism and those gods did not provide moral definitions or even guides on how to lives. but per Plato and most scholars agree... Morals and ethics are learned. we internalize them and then we make decisions based on those teachings. they can change throughout life based on experiences. even if you are religious you get your moral lessons the same way (books, parents, school, environment) internalize them and go from there
The first four commandments have nothing to do with morality, anyway.
The rest is a list of some of the things I wouldn't like done to me, which is where my morality is based.
There are other things that I wouldn't like done to me, but on the other hand there are people who wouldn't mind things like that being done to them, and that's up to them.
@madhatters4 Sorry it took so long to respond. The reason I think personal feelings is a bad basis for morality is because if that's the case, there is no objective standard by which moral decisions can be made. I also realize it's an old question, but that doesn't matter. The question of morality always faces the living.
What I'm asking for is what specifically morality is based on in the absence of an external authority. Not generalizations. This is not a trick question. I can think of answers, but I would like to hear specifics from somebody else. Please, I really don't want to guess.
i'd like to hear your opinions. morality is subjective. for example. while most people agree murder is wrong many people will say that they feel killing a person in self defense or to protect someone else may be justified. most will say stealing is wrong but many may say stealing from someone who has lots to help someone who has very little (the robin hood archetype) may be justified
the reason i brought up how old the question is, is only to point out that the source of our morals and ethics is a real philosophical question and one that has gone on for 1000s of years without any true answer. it's the reason why morals depend on the person. you can have people who go to teh same church and they can have varying beliefs on certain moral principles. like some who go to church may be OK with LGBT culture and lifestyle while others in the same church believe it to be a sin or just wrong
I was raised catholic... That doesn't mean I actually believed in god. When I was young I parroted everything I heard but didn't really care enough to believe myself. Took me about 3 mins when I started to question my religion to realize I never really believed in god

I agree, thank you, thank you, thank YOU!!!
This is all very true. I'm getting sick of theists running up to me and start explaining with their religious logic their religion to which I have 0 interest and lacks real applicable logic.
If there was a saying for these religious fanatics to simply say "I don't care about your religion and I never will" I would say it every time they brought it up.
hmmm... I m not against atheist cuz some of my friend also atheist and they r also human with their own opinion n choices but is there any single day goes when u don't remember god or speak to his name even u r atheist u speak to his name "Oh my God"... that's it even atheist believe in god but not any single structure or statue
Yeah atheists can't hate God because they don't believe he exists and their not Satan worshipers because they don't believe in him either, I myself am not atheist, also atheism isn't a religion it's a belief, or lack of belief.
Lol at the picture of Winnie the pooh worshiping Satan, and I don't have a problem with someone else's beliefs as long as they don't try to force them on me
Exactly. A lot of atheists do a lot of research in order to avoid misunderstanding theists. I just ask the same in return. It's futile, but I do anyway.
every criticism we know of Christianity is based on culture so as much as there are many good open minded Christians the base of their church and religion is putrid.

An atheist is usually a person who has read about religions, interpreted them with his own logic, then chose to oppose god or god, good and bad ones.
An agnostic is one who doesn't care if god exists or not, or thinks that we can't prove or disprove his existence through human logic.

I'm an atheist and I'm offended at this because I worship the God Emperor of Mankind.

Strict relgious people aren't reasonable they want me beaten to death and bow down on my knees and worship god.
I heard that from a Christian person that used to be my friend.

He's a good guy :-)

Very good point - I respect people of faith so I expect the same respect in return (I am an atheist)
Exactly. A lot of atheists do a lot of research in order to avoid misunderstanding theists. I just ask the same in return. It's futile, but I do anyway.
I work with a atheist and he is rude... angry and in your face. He goes out of his way to get into arguments. People shy away from him.
Enter in a generalization.
@AlwaysBelieving enter in a person that doesn't read. Did I say all atheist? No I didn't. I was just telling about my experience.
every criticism we know of Christianity is based on culture so as much as there are many good open minded Christians the base of their church and religion is putrid.
@Wolfstarking kinda like the base of Islam? You can't say that statement and include other religions.
I am relgious but I always try to explain that to my relgious friends lol
Perfect take! I've been told all of this at least once
Great Take, I agree, completely 👍
Thank you! ^_^
You're welcome
LOL...
That point about Athiests not having read the bible deserves a standing ovation.
Sometimes I think the one group of people who have least read the Bible are Christians.
