The Year Was 1993

Ah '93, has it really been 25 years! Damn, I really hate math. Bill Clinton was the new President ending the Reagan/Bush era once and for all. Gas was $1.14 a gallon. Minimum wage was $4.25 per hour and the cost of a movie ticket was about the same. But most importantly I had just turned into a teen aged "Know-it-all" at time. (We've all been there.) So '93 was a big year of trouble for me as well as the world. Let's jump in to it.

Sports

This was the first year where we saw The Bills and The Cowboys face off in the Superbowl. With the Cowboys destroying The Buffalo Bills 52-17. O.J. Simpson flipped the coin for the game and Michael Jackson did the Halftime show. Jackson's performance started the NFL's trend of signing top acts to appear during the Super Bowl to attract more viewers and interest. Although both Jackson and Simpson would get into a lot of trouble later in the decade, the game was good.

The Bulls won the first "Three-peat" in NBA since the 1960's against the Phoenix Suns. It was also the first time Jordan would "retire" and fans were sad to see him go but couldn't blame him after losing his father in a car jacking.

In the aftermath of the '92 L.A. Riots, public pressure mounted for a retrial of the officers involved the the Rodney King beating, and federal charges of civil rights violations were brought against them. As the first anniversary of the acquittal neared, the city tensely awaited the decision of the federal jury; seven days of deliberations raised fears of further violence in the event of another not guilty verdict.

The decision was read in a typical 7:00 am Saturday court session on April 17, 1993. Two officers—Officer Laurence Powell and Sergeant Stacey Koon—were found guilty, while officers Theodore Briseno and Timothy Wind were acquitted. Mindful of accusations of sensationalist reporting in the wake of the first trial and the resulting chaos, media outlets opted for more sober coverage, which included calmer on-the-street interviews. Police were fully mobilized with officers on 12-hour shifts, convoy patrols, scout helicopters, street barricades, tactical command centers, and support from the Army National Guard, the active-duty Army and the Marines.

Movies and T.V.

Also a would be filmmaker name Kevin Smith premiered a little movie called Clerks that year. When it was first screened at the Independent Feature Film Market, only 12 people showed up, including Kevin himself and 7 people from the cast and crew, and 2 random people.

The top three T.V. shows in the U.S. were 60 Minutes (CBS), Home Improvement (ABC) and Seinfeld (NBC)

The Motorola Personal Phone aka "The Brick" which came out in 1992 was still the most popular cell phone of it's day and wouldn't be out sold until 1996 by the Nokia 1610. Like other mobile phones that preceded it, the 3200's shape (and size) resembled an elongated brick, with the numeric buttons on the narrow side, along with the earphone and microphone. Designed to work solely in the GSM 900 MHz band, the flexible "rubber duck" antenna was two-thirds as long as the phone's case.

It was equipped with a 750mAh battery which required 5 hours to charge, the phone lasted 8 hours in Stand-by or 30 minutes (continuous, weak signal) to 1 hour (short calls, good signal) of talk time. A 1500mAh battery was also offered as an option, requiring 10 hours to charge, with 16 hours of stand-by time or up to 2 hours of talk time. (And you think your phone can't hold a charge.)

DOOM is released. An immersive first-person shooter-style game, Doom becomes popular on many different platforms. Initially distributed via USENET newsgroups, Doom attracted a massive following. Doom players were also among the first to customize the game’s levels and appearance though "modding." Some criticized the level of violence portrayed in Doom, and it was cited as a prime reason for US Congressional hearings on video game violence in 1995. Doom spawned several sequels and a 2005 film.

Myst is also released. Developed by brothers Robyn and Ryan Miller, Myst becomes one of the best-known games of the 1990s. Distributed by Broderbund for the Macintosh, Myst took the player on an adventure as The Stranger, using a magical book to track the time traveling character Atrus through the Ages of Myst. The game required players to solve puzzles and find clues to discover the nature of the island of Myst. Myst is often credited with greatly increasing the sales of CD-ROM drives for computers. The game became the best-selling personal computer game of all-time – a distinction it would hold until 2002.

Music

The top three overplayed songs of the year were "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston, "Whoomp! (There It Is)" by Tag Team and "Can't Help Falling in Love" by UB40. Although the first two were very aggravating for a few years after that.

Overall 1993 was an interesting year for me. The first year I was "legally" considered a Teenager and the last year I went "trick or treating." I also met my first teen aged love that year and promptly started my plans to take over the world afterwards. At 13 I became aware of just how volatile Humanity was thanks to Waco and the LA Riots from the year before. To be honest though I was more concerned with a girl name Ruth. To those that turn 25 this year... Welcome to the downward spiral! (Fyi: You're no longer cool.)
