Its the general go-to for people looking to put down the opinions of younger generations to appeal to seniority when they are unable to contest the logic behind said opinions. Using one liner gems such as
"You're (insert young age) so shut up!"
"Your a teenager, you know nothing about (insert topic of conversation)"
Not only is this approach a logical fallacy, it's blatantly untrue in a lot of instances. We all have our areas of expertise and different experiences, AND exposure to different standards of education.
Lets examine examples of these.
Areas of expertise and experience.
Just because you're older doesn't necessitate that youve spent those years experiencing a wide variety of things or becoming proficient in many different fields. A middle aged man who's spent his entire life flipping burgers never doing anything else or going anywhere else probably shouldn't try telling younger people how to live their lives should he?
Another example: me personally, I'm pretty Damn good at wakeboarding.
You could be 50 years old, but I guarantee you if you haven't wakeboarded before then guess what, you could stand to learn a thing or two from a younger person who has, or else break your face on the surface of the water because you didn't put your weight on your heels. Scrub

Another thing I know a lot about are castles.
Because castles are fucking awesome! End of story! You may be older than me, but if you confuse crenelations and machicolations I will KICK. YOUR. ASS!
Jk I'm not a violent personπ I'll just tell you the difference between the two and what their purpose was in castle defence. Also that they both fall under the umbrella term "battlements". And also the difference between towers and bastions. I really love castlesπππ
Young people are capable of having experiences you haven't and skills you dont possess. *they also can have the same knowledge you do and just have a differing opinion or come to different conclusions*
How about standards of education?
This may vary more by country or state too, but can you honestly tell me you remember everything you learned in high school or even college if you went?
For example: if you're in you're 40s or 50s right now, unless you made a career out of it i'm willing to bet I'm better at calculus than you are. I still have my nueroplasticity, all the lessons and practice are fresh in my mind whereas you probably haven't used math beyond balancing your checkbook in years. by the way who still does that? We've got apps for that shit people, keep up.
Also textbooks get updated and new information is added to our collective human knowledge that you may not have bothered to go back and look up, So there's that to consider as well.
*Thats not to say that there aren't things older people typically do have more experience with*
On the reverse side as an adult you probably have a career, a spouse, and maybe kids too. If your career is dolphin training or construction work or whatever, i would never presume to know More about that than you. If you've been married for 20 years, you probably have a lot to teach people about how to make a marriage work. If you have kids I'm not going to tell you how to raise your kids. I dont have any. I may have opinions from the perspective of having been the child myself but maybe you should welcome that perspective every once in a while.
Having said all that, don't take that compliment as invitation to tell me creationism is true, or some comparably stupid bullshit, and then disregard my rebuttal just because I'm a teenager. The number of years youve been alive is not license to turn lies into facts mkay?
But by FAR the worst topic of conversation between young and old is POLITICS.
Its the worst topic ever, period. Between anyone. But nowhere is the disparity more apparent between the younger, more liberal generations and the older, more conservative generations.
And I'm not just making that generalization out of nothing. If it's not blatantly apparent to you you can just look at the polls and surveys. If you're a liberal older person like bernie sanders then cool, but you're an outlier in terms of the data collected.

The laws that govern this country affect ALL of society. Young, old, black, white, male, female, everyone. Not everyone gets to vote, which is fine I mean we can't have toddlers voting for president ok, there's got to be a line somewhere. but everyone still gets to voice their opinions.
Opinions are supported by facts and reasoning if theyre any good, not the age on your drivers license. So in closing, if you disagree with someone challenge the reasoning behind their statements instead of superficial qualities like their age.
Being older doesn't make you smart or right by default. Some adults are even outright stupid like this guy:
