A Few of My Favorite Poems

Post includes different kinds of poetry, including slam poetry. Try not to be offended if you don't see your favorite kind of poetry.

1. My Wife is Shaped Like by William Evans

This poem always leaves me stunned at the end whenever I hear it.

2. To The Girl Who Works at Starbucks by Rudy Francisco

This was a really cute poem. The fact that he's nervous when talking about her makes it cuter.

3. Explaining My Depression to My Mother by Sabrina Benaim

Depression is still a rather misunderstood mental illness and she describes depression very well.

4. Paper Babies by Rachel Wiley

I really love this poem because she does a very good job describing how I also feel about not having kids. Especially the line, "I would've had my tubes tied yesterday if I could." I am thinking about doing this poem for my "dramatic reading" speech for my communications class. This or #10 I think are both good choices

5. OCD by Neil Hilborn

I can't imagine how many times he rehearsed this before he got the guts to do it live. I think he perfectly conveyed OCD and showed just how unromantic mental illness really is.

6. Happy Mothers Day by Ebony Stewart

This describes my relationship with my mom to a T.

7. Put Some Respeck On It by Alyesha Wise

She is so sassy and I love it.

8. Dry Cake Wishes and Tap Water Dreams

I loved hearing this poem after hearing all the various things my ex told me when we broke up.

9. Somewhere in America by The Los Angeles Team

I remember seeing this poem when I was in high school. Loved it then and still love it.

10. The Kindest Thing She Almost Did by Blythe Baird

This described my last relationship really well. I think when people ask why I think our relationship was borderline toxic, I want to direct them to this poem. Especially when I gave 100% into that relationship, but he couldn't even check to see if I was okay when I was assaulted at work. Especially the lines, "she tells me I don't know how to love anyone with my whole being. I tell her, I don't know how to not."

11. Anxiety: A Ghost Story

I've lived with anxiety for a long time. I remember having really bad social anxiety as a kid and I was officially diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder at 15. I've even gone to a therapist about it. To me, this poem perfectly describes how anxiety feels.
