Do you really think that Educational Facilities should be PRO GUNS. I don't think Kent, OH is a really dangerous town by any means. Could you carry guns off campus...maybe? I can't believe this girl is that adamant about letting students carry guns on campus when she isn't even a student anymore. She graduated already. You shouldn't protest about some bullshit that doesn't currently affect your life. As of now visitors can and are allowed to carry guns. Note; THIS INCLUDES HER. SHE can currently CARRY A GUN on campus because SHE IS NOW A VISITOR!!! SHE can't, respect the fucking policy. I'm sick of hearing about this girl and how she wants to make this a policy on campus. You don't see me marching around trying to get Kent to legalize anything because I graduated. I'm done with school and she should be too. What do you guys and girls think of this. As someone who lives on a college campus I would not feel comfortable with a school full of people with guns who have not had background checks. I've seen people flip the fuck out and I honestly don't want to even think of what would have happened if they had a gun on them.

Forgive me for asking, but I always thought that "liberal" derives from "liberty" (i. e. "freedom"), with core mantra being "I may disagree with what you say, but I'll die fighting for your right to speak"; doesn't your statement directly contradict "very very liberal" value?

And in theory I do wonder a little bit; if someone, say, acquires gun illegally (by, for example, knocking out a cop and taking his gun) and decides to visit some college to shoot up some kids for shits and giggles, what those kids will do while the police is on the way? Think about that for a minute. If everyone WAITED to stand up and protest ONLY when something currently affected them, it would be too late. But that's another story. I'm not going to attempt to answer "why are we so obsessed with guns". The fact that she's a staunch Republican has nothing to do with her right to attend any college she got accept to, whether you think "she belongs" there or not. Colleges are supposed to be places where diverse opinions and philosophies can be discussed openly, without fear and prejudice. KSU has the ability to deny her visitation if they choose, I imagine. Perhaps you should bring your case to administration and President of the University? Keep in mind too... Ohio is an open carry law state, but I believe the university can ban guns on campus (except for security guards), because it's a private university. I'm not certain on that law.

There are too many educational facilities (colleges, universities, etc.) where (mostly) female students are sexually assaulted and the administrators want to "sweep it under the rug" because they don't want bad publicity.
So I can understand why someone would want to carry a gun. Unfortunately, if a woman carries a gun and the guy has greater upper body strength (as it says in the book "Are Men the Weaker Sex") and he succeeds in wrestling it away from her, it may not help her.
The administrators should decide whether it's acceptable for students, staff, visitors, etc. to carry weapons on campus.

What all educational facilities need to do is adopt a zero tolerance level for any kind of violence on campus - and investigate (take seriously), prosecute (if necessary), etc. anyone who is suspected of committing crimes against another. Then maybe, there won't be any need for guns.
Because you can be guaranteed the "bad guys" will use guns, if necessary, to successfully commit their crimes. If there's a no-gun policy and a "we'll take your complaint seriously" policy, then hopefully schools will be a safe place for students to learn.
I mean, isn't studying hard enough on its own without having to worry whether someone's going to shoot you, molest you, etc? :)

First of all, as a lifelong Ohioan, Kent State University is only mentioned in discussions because of the Kent State Shootings in 1970. I would say that destroyed your Alma Mater's reputation more than the "Gun Girl" will ever do. I knew people in high school who refused to go there because it was the "shootings school", and that reputation seems to have carried on nearly 50 years later. We used to sing the song "Ohio" by Neil Young, and our teachers warned us (as a joke) about going to KSU.

Second of all, just because an issue doesn't affect her, doesn't mean she can't protest it. I know people who used to protest abortion when it didn't affect them personally. I know people who protested as an advocate for marriage equality when it didn't concern them personally. We should definitely care about issues which affect people, whether it affects YOU personally, or not.

And does it matter that she's a Republican on a liberal campus? If anything, that makes her case more interesting, since she's challenging the status quo. Who wants to hear about a liberal on a liberal campus, or vice versa?

With that being said, I don't agree with how lax our Conceal Carry laws are either, and I'm on the liberal side of gun control, but this MyTake is a gross overreaction.

In my opinion, guns should NOT be permitted on any school grounds under any circumstances, unless you are a police officer, but even then, it should never be drawn unless it is an emergency.

Secondly, she already graduated and is not a staff member. The only reason she would be trying to change the police is because she feels like she's doing everyone a favor, when in reality, she is putting people's lives at risk. More often than not school shooters are students currently attending that school. Making guns more accessible on campus only increases the likelihood of a school shooting. Also, if a school shooting does occur, people with guns are most likely the first to get shot, be it by the shooter, or a police officer who mistakes the armed person for the shooter.

At least it isn't as bad as everyone saying that teachers should carry a firearm with them at all time, this includes highschools, middle schools, elementary schools, and yes, even preschools and daycares (which was a legitimate concern that popped up in the wake of the most recent string of school shooting, that I am SOO glad went nowhere

Well, guess what; those violators don't target uniformed policemen. they target their fellow students, and the faculty. THOSE are who need weapons for self-defense; not the untargeted cops.

@taleswapper Are you sure that a shooter would target unarmed people before, I don't know, THE ONLY OTHER PEOPLE THERE WHO CAN SHOOT THEM! And if it isn't the cops who they target, then it would probably be some other special task force (like the SWAT) who arrive to dispatch the shooter. Most school shooting only have one or two other shooters. You don't see a large group of people plotting a school shooting like you do with other shootings/terrorist attacks. A couple of trained police officers should to take down the shooter. Even if everyone has a gun, not everyone would know what the shooter looks like, so chances are, everyone will be firing at each other, drastically increasing the body count and as I mentioned, the police who come to settle the situation won't know who the shooter is.

While yes, people carrying guns would help for self defense, in a place where there is mass panic and/or evacuation, it'll only cause more harm than help.

I honestly find this one a complete rabbit hole leaving aside the possible extreme positions both sides will take there is a middle ground of the protection argument which is fair enough but also the having a gun in potential misunderstandings, or with drink/drugs taken which also is a fair concern. To illustrate the point many years ago, my friend and I were walking back from a concert after a few beers trying to get a taxi around 2.30 am , we were approached by a rather large tough looking skinhead. My friend looked at each other nervously, through eye contact "Do we run or do we fight?", the guy comes close and politely asks us what time it is? A funny recollection, imagine we had a gun and pulled it, what if he had a gun, who knows what could have happened. A funny situation becomes very dangerous. If needs be, I would favour a highly visible armed campus police.

Colleges are not Republican or Democrat. They are supposed to be unbiased places of learning. Though this hasn't always worked out, that is still the goal of public colleges, and most private universities. It seems that you hold a bias that is unbecoming of someone seeking higher education. Higher education promotes free speech, something you seem to not be a fan of (please correct me if I'm wrong). My university freely allows people to conceal carry, do I agree with it, not really, but no one has been shot by someone else. The only times on my campus that a gun has been used to harm someone were a few suicides, most of which occurred before guns were even allowed on campus. I'm not saying the policy made a difference, in fact it hasn't changed anything.

Not to long ago even California was very lax on carrying guns on campus. People used to attend colleges with gun racks on the back of there trucks, people didn't think much about it until some kids in Colorado made it an incident. Now days because we have become sensitized towards guns and gun violence if someone drove through a college parking lot with a gun rack on the back of there truck the school would go on lockdown, the swat team would be called and every student and teacher would be sent to therapy for PTSD.

I wouldn't trust a student with a gun, and I'm kind of on the fence about letting a teacher bring a gun. For students I'd be worried one would shoot up the school since it'd be easier for them to bring in a gun or acquire a gun or be irresponsible and start messing around with it and end up shooting themselves or someone else by accident, for teachers I can see how it would be useful and I think a teacher would be more responsible when handling a gun. Also a teacher saving his/her students from attackers by whipping out a gun sounds kinda badass.
A security guard should definitely be allowed to carry a gun.
Maybe the students could be allowed to carry less harmful self defense items like pepperspray or tasers? Although, knowing teenagers they'd probably start pepperspraying and tasing eachother for the lols.
