New York Draft Riots is a Perfect Metaphor for our Southern Border today

Four days in July 1863, New York was under mob rule after one of the first army drafts were initiated. Ironically, the South was the first to issue a national draft months before.

The working Irish were apparently the worst rioters, not wanting to compete with freed slaves for the lowest paying jobs. Reading this made me think of the conjured “immigrant invasion” made by the right wing.

Perhaps we stop fighting for scraps and compete for the best jobs? But of course that would require education.

Blacks were targeted and severely lynched.
