While I suppose that could be a valid point when every addressing the issues of gender rolls we must, of course, delve into history.
From the 1600's women in America (At least in the Chesopeak area) were there for show. They learned to play music, paint, draw, be a lady. They didn't work, they didn't plow the lands or work the seed, oooh no. Southern Bells.
But, from the beginning of time women have had a very defining role in society. They give birth to the children, therefore they raise them, the man, being the strong leader hero, goes out to do hard labor, work and earn money for his wife and child, support them. And, as a thanks, the wife will stay at home, take care of the kids, clean the house and cook for him. So that, when he arrives back he could relax. A man's place was out in the real world, the work force. A woman's was to learn to be petite and quiet, how to cook and clean, and watch after children.
Women were frail and weak, innocent and niave. It wasn't until the 1930's, when World War Two hit that there was a real boom of women in the workforce. Before that it just wasn't acceptable, if your husband allowed it you might be able to work as a secratary, maybe a nurse, a school teacher if you were lucky. When all the men left for war the women stepped in and took their job, in fact the government promoted it, which is where we get the "Rosie the Riveter" icon. It was to spur up the women back home into going in to take their husband's places in factories, hospitals, school houses, doing every thing that was left open.
When the men returned home and they tried to force the women back into the houses they refused to go so easily and thus began the woman's suffrage movement.
So, to answer your question, men were the head of the household because they owned everything. They paid the mortgage, bought the food, the clothes, the furnature, paid the bills and worked a 40 hour week, if not more, to get it all done. It wasn't supposed to be their job to worry about the toils and troubles of the home, of cleaning and cooking, that was women's work. Read magazines, gossip, stay in the home and be a something for show, an beautiful fragile barbie.
Hope that helps, if not you can go onto google, look up brief histories on the evolution of women in the work place, like this one here--

throughout the animal kingdom, with a few exceptions, the males play NO role what so ever except doing the "deed". their sole purpose in life is to feed themselves and to f*** as many females as they can. they don't stick around to raise their offspring, they don't "bring home the bacon" they provide for themselves only. meanwhile, it is the female who raises the young and hunts to feed them on her own. with lions, it's the females who do all the hunting, all the cub rearing, they do all the work. the job of the male lion is to look impressive and make babies, they even rely on the females to catch their dinner.
so I don't know what you're talking about, women stay home and care for the kids because, with the exception of sea horses and penguins, men can be counted on to do absolutely NOTHING. I don't know why human females have elected to stay home and do domestic work and let the men earn the money, because it's rather unusual when you look at other animals.
genetically, women are supposed to care for the children, it's the reason why women only release one egg per month (normally), it's the reason why women have breasts that lactate, it's the reason why women go through menopause and men stay potent all their lives, and it's the reason why women, on average, live longer than men.
I think you are seeing it differently than most people do (although I kinda like your way of thinking more). But when people refer to the man of a relationship, they refer to the person who provides for his household. The one out making money to bring home food and other necessities to his wife and children. The woman is traditionally supposed to take care of the children, cook, and clean, because these are tasks that are considered to be menial and not worthy of a "man's" time. Women are also not the face of a household. They are behind the scenes workers. Again, this is all traditional stuff. Today, there are a lot of men who stay at home and do "women's work".
in history men were always the hunters. they went out and killed sh*t to bring back to his family so that they could stay alive. therefore they were endowed with better hunting skills and were more muscular.
back then the women had babies(sorta like nowadays) and so they instinctively had better nurturing skills than the men. they stayed home and kept the babies healthy by keeping the home clean and free of things that might cause disease or be hazardous. so theyre better at that sh*t.
a man and woman WORK as a team toward a common end: staying alive and procreating.
nowadays its just more complicated... but it hasn't changed.
sure why not? since us guys have to do all that nerve-wracking work in order to get a date or girlfriend, make the first move and start a conversation, overall, initiate the date and relationship, us guys might as well should do all the other work, we might as well become women's slaves!

I don't agree with this.
I'd rather have us both share everything.
Like me and my boyfriend both clean up after our selves and make sure the apartments nice. We take turn cooking dinner or we just make our own meals.
And I don't think it should always be the guy to pursue the girl. I've asked out plenty of guys and it's gone well. Also, some guys are really shy and I'm sure they'd love a girl approaching them for a change. That's just the way it goes. When it's dangerous to go out and do sh*t, women want to stay home and "real men should provide for their families". When workplaces turned from coal-mines into cool air-conditioned offices, suddenly they're much more eager to go out and work.
Its all about human history. Back when we were hunter-gatherers, it was more dangerous to go out and hunt meat then to stay at home and gather berries and take care of the offspring. Men are expendable because they can produce more children with multiple partners. Their job is done quickly whereas females take 9 months for each child. It is because women are so important to maintaining and increasing the population (population means power) that they had to stay at home were it was safe. Its not about who has power and ability. Its a survival instinct. But because there it really no danger anymore (your not going to get eaten by a bear while working at your desk) that instinct is not needed anymore, so its slowly being weeded out.
Here is my philosophy: If the man is going to work and getting paid, the woman should be the homemaker. If the woman is going out getting paid at work, the man should do it. If both are out, both should share the responsibility.
Women are not naturally to inclined to look for a leader. It really depends on the person.
