Men pick higher paid industries than women within the same career.
We know this. We have data on this.
We can't quantify if even within industries men choose employer with more weighting to salary vs other factors but it seems highly likely.
I think as long as earning more boosts men's dating and relationship options men will continue to choose pay over other factors in choosing jobs and a societal pay gap will exist.
On top of that men are more likely than women to push for more pay in negotiation. This is often taken as women needing to speak up more. There is likely some truth to it. But it's also likely true that when men are negotiating for more pay, they really are more prepared to switch jobs over it.
In the Western world? No, not at all, though you can say there is, and it's due to personal choice, but I don't consider that a pay gap, though.
Those who say there is have been fed bullshit statistics, and since most like being victims, they believe them. Educate yourselves, and you'll see how there's no pay gap.

In most industries, I don't think there really is one. But there are a few that there is indeed a pay gap based on gender. I'm sure you have seen the Hollywood pay gap, where the female lead (like Oscar winner Charlize Theron) got paid way less than the male co-star, who only is known for one role really.
The only sexist pay gap I know is in porn where women get like 6-10 times the pay a man gets. And everywhere else women cry about getting paid two dimes less than men.
Isn't that just sub-concious sexism? I'm a part of society, as are most people on this site, and we don't all sit at a round-table, smoking cigars, thinking of ways to be deliberately sexist to women.
@astrOnaut01 No need to "all sit at a round-table, smoking cigars, thinking of ways to be deliberately sexist to women." It's integrated in society and passed on through double standards education and archetypes in publicity.
That's her choice to take time off though, while the male could take time off with their child. I'm a leftist too, but don't just talk out of your ass, this wage gap myth is a shill.
The average woman earns less than an average man because more men opt for STEM fields and business ventures than women. Women majorly go in teaching, home sciences and clerical jobs. Besides that I dont know a single woman who gets paid less than men in the same filed/same post. Infact women get paid maternity leaves. No man gets paid 3-6 months leave
I think that there is a gender wage gap HOWEVER I do not think that it is due to deliberate sexism. There is simply not enough evidence to support that idea, and usually the simpler solution is the one that is more likely to be true. In this case, I think it is likelier that women are paid less simply because pay is often determined by seniority and they have simply been in the workplace for less time than men have due to past gender roles.
Its personal choice. An example of this would be my parents who have similar qualifications, worked in the same field for the same company and started in the same year. In their 20s my mum progressed quicker than my dad and earned more money than him. Then she had two children and starte to work part time and concentrated less on her career. My dad is now earns 2x what she does and works a lot more hours. Is this sexism? Nah. Yes there is a paygap but its not really an issue. If a women decides to have a career then she can if she wants.
I think there's a bit of a wage gap. Guys are taught to be assertive and that comes in handy during salary negotiations. Girls have a tougher time trying to be assertive so employers can take advantage of that by pushing for a lower wage. It's another reason why the notion of not talking about your wage is around. The employers don't want people making less to know they could get more if they simply were assertive with asking for a higher pay.
US/UK statistics show that there's a gender pay gap if you take an average of each gender's total pay per annum, not hourly. Hourly there's a pay gap of about 7cents between men and women. I would imagine most 1st world countries would follow this trend.
Other countries? Yeah there's probably considerable pay gap between men and women's hourly rate of pay, and it's probably due to sexism at least in part.
A gender pay gap is for people delusional enough to think men would rather pay more for the workplace to be a sausage fest.
It's same as those people "OMG, I work at McDonalds, and they only give me 20 hours a week, at minimum wage, and I have two keeds to feed." While all the sane people are going "Moron, get a full time job elsewhere! And why did you have kids when you couldn't feed them!"

I like to call it a career gap. Women and men are pushed in certain ways growing up into certain careers, which leads to the pay gap. Women still get payed less in most fields, but I not the classic 75 cents tot he dollar.
We need to change the way working women are portrayed and how we raise our children to do away with gender work lace inequalities.
Yes but its because of money not really sexism. Women can have babies and that means maturity leave and other things that cost a company money. I don't think it's fair because not all women want children and some men actually want to spend time with their child in the beginning of their life but that's how it is.
There is a gender pay gap, it's justified however. Women are more likely to be unable to work because of sickness, becoming a parent or whatever, yet you have to continue paying them for the time they don't work or you have to make sure she gets her job back once she's back from her parental leave.
I have seen the statistics, which is mostly cherry-picked to support either side's claim. What I know from where I live, the pay gap is small and is due to men, overall, working more paid hours.
It was in the news a while ago that a minister in my country found out that the employees in his ministry had a gender gap in pay; he, naturally, said it was totally wrong and had it fixed immediately.
And there's a union in my country that works hard at listing companies that don't discriminate against genders in their pay, and that list is regularly published in all the media in my country. Hopefully this ridiculous gender gap will be eliminated soon, permanently.

Most of it can be accounted for by personal choice, but even accounting for all of that there is still a gap.
How big of a gap?
4-8% depending on who you ask.
There IS a gender pay gap caused by deliberate sexism in the roles and chores expected by men and society from women.
I find it interesting that you only seem to notice the detriment of women.
The only sexist pay gap I know is in porn where women get like 6-10 times the pay a man gets. And everywhere else women cry about getting paid two dimes less than men.
It's the origin of the pay gap.
Wildly inaccurate statements like this should be erased from the site.
@genuinlysensitive Censorship thus when you consider it doesn't reflect *your* opinion?
How is it deliberate sexism when it's the woman's choice to take time off to take care of her child?
@Protagoras
it is deliberate sexism if the woman is pushed to do it by society and by her family.
Isn't that just sub-concious sexism? I'm a part of society, as are most people on this site, and we don't all sit at a round-table, smoking cigars, thinking of ways to be deliberately sexist to women.

Yes, a pay gap exists. No, its not because of sexism but other reasons which all come down to individual choices that differ between the sexes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_sGn6PdmIoThomas Sowell knew it a few decades ago already:
