Why do pedestrians get heckled for walking sometimes?

I have a drivers license and I do drive but I dont own the car I drive. So I walk most of the time because most of the stores and places are within a mile of my house so I can be there in 20 minutes. Yet I do get heckled and honked at sometimes by passers by who yell stuff out of their cars but I can't understand what they are saying. What I dont understand is in places like NYC, Chicago, LA, Charlotte, Dallas etc.. Its ok to be a pedestrian but not in Small town North Carolina USA? I do drive to work, but if its nice out I do walk to walmart and places which is just a mile from my house. Do we really have people so narrow minded tha they dont think people without cars should be able to go anywhere?

People do that just to mess with you. People sometimes honk at me or hoot and stuff. They're just assholes. Unless you're walking in the road, there is no reason for someone to honk at you.

Now on campus things are much better, people are less likely to go when I have the right of way to cross the street (with a color sign or a simple metal one) because they are accustomed to stopping for us (and our herds, haha)

Of course, everyone walks, and there would be a lot of witnesses if they did something stupid and illegal.

However, on the flip side, there are a noteworthy amount of times where people have screamed out their windows at us at the bus stop... and one time, this guy released his truck exhaust fumes on some Indian students :/ totally disgusting human being.

People get "road rage" and they get "road retarded" too, no offense to people with special needs. I love to walk and I get people saying stupid things to me like "I always see you walking". I feel like pointing out that's why they are obese and I'm not but I just tell them it's good exercise.

This is a good question --- pedestrians are not respected in my experience either, people often go across the crosswalk when i legally have the right of way and nearly run me over

Unfortunately, America is still an incredibly pedestrian-hostile and also bicycle-hostile country. I'm very glad this is different in my country. Most Americans are obsessed with their cars and they think anyone who doesn't own/drive a car is a loser. This is particularly true for conservative regions in the US. Places like NYC or LA are more liberal and thus more tolerant of unmotorized means of mobility.

Maybe you have a "honk if you're horny" sign on the back of your shirts and don't know it. Or maybe they know you and trying to get your attention. Or you have terrible luck with people honking at other cars

Because drivers need to learn what a steel toed boot or a proper elbow strike can do to a door panel when you fuck with the wrong pedestrian, and that if I have them, I'll drop wood screws in the path of your vehicle before I get out of the way.
