Kiwi child killer struggling under the shadow of her crimes

You might never guess Rebecca Papalii's background - but she's happy to tell you about it anyway.

The 55-year-old cuts a glamorous figure in the otherwise unremarkable Northland town of Kaikohe, her smiling face and warm nature prompting a stranger to embrace her.

Stuff broke the news of her deportation to New Zealand in January 2015, having served a lengthy sentence for the kidnapping, torture, and murder of Australian child Cleon Jackman in Perth.

Cleon was 14 when he was targeted by Papalii and her friends Derrin Bardsley and James Stapleton after Papalii alleged the teenager had been harassing her.

Over five hours Jackman was tied, tortured, and eventually killed.

In sentencing, the judge said Papalii set up the situation by identifying Cleon. She struck him with a baton and stood over him smiling, and terrified him with a knife. She helped dispose of the body, and was so calm she stopped for a meal on the way home. She lied consistently to investigating police, and showed no remorse.

Papalii was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison, later reduced on appeal. After being paroled, she was immediately sent back to New Zealand.

Still, she acknowledges it's not been an easy road.

Her convictions have made it almost impossible to get a job. She has applied for hundreds, she says, and the stigma of her past makes it hard for some people to fully accept her.

So in conclusion:
Society will always sympathise with women because the view of society is that women who commit heinous crimes probably had a dismal past that forced them to do what they did. In other words, they were pushed to become monsters by their environment.

Contrast that with society's impression of men as monsters and criminals thus whatever crimes they commit is because of their innate nature to be hostile, aggressive, and violent.

I view someone who would do this crime as an innate monster, regardless of gender. There are also plenty of men who have gotten seemingly light sentences after they have committed heinous crimes... That is the price we pay for a jaded justice system fueled by money, sex and politics. I don't view random men walking down the streets as innate monsters.

I see it happen in school. I once saw a girl touch a boy belly when he did it to her he got expelled. Everyone said she did it first but they said he should have kept his hands to himself. But what about her? She pretty much laughed at all the boys. Boys always get crapped on.
